Regis College has been recognized by Insight Into Academia magazine with its Inspiring Programs in STEM Award for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to inclusive excellence and belonging across the institution’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Regis is one of only 57 colleges and universities nationwide — and one of just three institutions in New England — selected for this honor, thanks to an investment from the Tegan Family Foundation.
Specifically, Regis was recognized for its Lorraine’s Leaders program, which empowers high school students such as those attending New Heights Charter School in Brockton, to develop leadership skills, build confidence, and engage in meaningful community service. Lorraine’s Leaders is a comprehensive college planning and coaching program for rising high school juniors and seniors from historically disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in pursuing health care or science careers. Through mentorship, workshops, and hands-on experiences, students are provided preparation for their college studies while still in high school. Lorraine’s Leaders is made possible through a generous initial investment of $365,000 from the Tegan Family Foundation.
Insight Into Academia explains that the STEM Award recognizes individual programs and initiatives that encourage and support the recruitment and retention of women and underrepresented students in all STEM disciplines, including but not limited to science and research, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“Regis College is committed to advancing STEM education through innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and hands-on learning experiences that prepare students to lead in a rapidly evolving world,” said Regis College President Antoinette Hays, PhD, RN. “We are grateful to the Tegan family for their generous donation to create Lorraine’s Leaders, a program that is transforming the lives of students whose families are facing financial challenges. This award affirms Regis' dedication to promoting inclusive excellence in STEM, ensuring that all students passionate about these fields have the opportunity to pursue their academic and professional goals.”
“We know that STEM programs are not always recognized for their dedication to inclusion, equity, and access” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Academia magazine. “We are proud to honor these college, university, and industry STEM programs as role models for other institutions of higher education.”
