Regis College mourns the passing of John J. Tegan, Jr., former Chair of the Regis College Board of Trustees, who died peacefully on January 16 surrounded by his loving family. 

John Tegan served on the Regis College Board of Trustees from 2013 to 2021, including five years as Chair. A devoted leader and generous philanthropist, he played a pivotal role during a period of significant growth for the university, helping to strengthen its foundation and advance its mission for future generations. 

"John's dedication to the mission of Regis was unwavering, and his extraordinary philanthropic leadership will leave a lasting legacy within the Regis community for generations to come," said Regis College President, Antoinette Hays, PhD, RN. “I will cherish the thoughtful conversations we shared. His guidance, kindness, and integrity left an indelible mark on me." 

In recognition of his extraordinary service and selflessness, Regis awarded John an honorary degree in 2022, and he was honored at the 2023 Let It Shine Gala. 

Tegan began his career as an educator at Revere Junior High School, where he served as Director of the Reading Program. It was there that he met his late wife, Lorraine DeStefano Tegan ’63. Through Lorraine, John came to know and embrace Regis and the values of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, values that shaped her confidence, character, and lifelong dedication to service. 

The Lorraine Tegan Learning Commons stands as a lasting testament to the Tegan family’s generosity and commitment to education. Today, it serves as a vibrant hub of academic support and guidance for Regis students. 

Throughout his life, John and his family remained deeply devoted to education and to Regis. Through his philanthropy, the university has been able to provide a high-quality Catholic education to students who may not otherwise have had the opportunity. The Tegan family name is forever woven into the fabric of the Regis campus, and their legacy will continue to shape generations of students to come.
