Applying for Aid as a First-Time Undergraduate Student

To apply for need-based financial aid, students and parents of dependent students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Regis College school code is 002206.

FAFSA Overview

You must apply for aid every year by submitting a FAFSA.

The 2024-2025 FAFSA is available now. We’re tracking a number of delays with submissions and processing, and we expect to start receiving information from the Department of Education in the middle of March. Three important notes:

  1. Despite these delays, please complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Having your application in the pipeline will help to assure that we get your information quickly once the Department of Education starts the data release.
  2. If you have submitted the FAFSA, but need to make corrections, you will not be able to do so until sometime in March. While this may further delay when we receive your information, it will not impact your eligibility for Regis funding.
  3. We know that these delays are not something that institutions or students can control. Regardless of when your FAFSA data gets to us, you will still have access to all of our need-based resources. There will be no late penalty on your access to Regis funds.

Steps to Apply for Financial Aid

  1. Create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSAID) online. If you are a dependent student, one of your parents will also need to create an FSAID.
  2. Complete and submit the FAFSA online. On the 2024–25 FAFSA form, every contributor—anyone (you, your spouse, a biological or adoptive parent, or your parent's spouse) who's required to provide information on the FAFSA form—needs a StudentAid.gov account before accessing and completing their section of the online form. Contributors can access their StudentAid.gov account by using their FSA ID (account username and password).

    Note: Contributors without an SSN can create a StudentAid.gov account to fill out their portion of your 2024–25 FAFSA form online.

    To start the online 2024–25 FAFSA form, select “Start New Form.” You’ll be taken to the “Log In” page to enter your account username and password. After logging in, you’ll be given the option to select your applicable role to fill out the FAFSA form: “Student” or “Parent.” You (the student) should select “Student.” If a parent wants to start their dependent child’s FAFSA form, they should select the “Parent” option.

  3. After the FAFSA is submitted, some students are selected for a process called Federal Verification. To complete this process we review data reported on your FAFSA and confirm its accuracy. During our review we may request additional documentation, as required by law. Students who will need to provide additional documents will receive a missing information request via mail or email from the Financial Aid Office letting you know what documents are needed. It’s important that you address the request because a financial aid award offer will not be made until all required material is received.
  4. Check your email. Messages regarding next steps, missing documents and eligibility will be emailed to you.
  5. You will be notified via email once your financial aid offer is available on Regis Access.

To be Eligible to Complete a FAFSA You Must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen (Note: Eligible noncitizens may be asked to provide appropriate documentation.);
  • Have a valid Social Security number;
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student in an eligible degree;
  • Be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for Direct Loan Program funds;
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Automatically Transferring Your Tax Information

The Financial Aid Direct Data Exchange, replacing the IRS Data Retrieval Tool starting with the 2024–25 FAFSA form, will transfer contributors' federal tax information from the IRS directly into your FAFSA form.

All contributors must provide consent and approval to

  • disclose their personally identifiable information provided on the FAFSA form to the IRS for matching purposes;
  • obtain their federal tax information from the IRS via direct data exchange;
  • allow the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to use their federal tax information to determine the student's eligibility and amount of federal student aid;
  • allow ED to share their federal tax information with colleges, career/trade schools, and state higher education agencies for use in awarding and administering financial aid; and
  • allow ED to reuse their federal tax information on another FAFSA applicant's form (e.g. if a parent has multiple dependent students or a parent's own FAFSA form).

Note: Even if contributors don't have an SSN, didn't file taxes, or filed taxes outside of the U.S., they will still need to provide consent and approval.

Important: If a required contributor doesn't provide consent and approval to have their federal tax information transferred into the FAFSA form, you (the student) will not be eligible for federal student aid—even if the contributor manually enters tax information into the FAFSA form.

To ensure the information is secure, the federal tax information won't display on the FAFSA site or the FAFSA Submission Summary.

A tax transcript can be obtained through the IRS website at:

  • Order it online from the IRS website
  • Or by downloading IRS Form 4506-T and mailing the form to the IRS
  • Or by calling the IRS at 1.800.908.9946

Tax transcripts should not be sent to Regis. Please have this form sent to you directly and then forward to Regis with the student name and ID number written across the top of the page.

Regis reserves the right to revise policies, procedures, fee structures, or information requirements at any time to conform to federal, state, local, or institutional policy.
