A HUGE thank you to our dedicated Facilities and Campus Police teams for their tremendous efforts in managing snow removal this week! Their tireless work keeps our campus safe and accessible not only during blizzards, but all year long. If you see them around campus, please thank them!

I would like to thank the search committee for their extensive work and investment of time and talent. These individuals have invested countless hours in the search process, and we are incredibly grateful for their effort.

Faculty and Staff News and Achievements
Dean of Arts and Sciences Joseph Draper and Colleen Malachowski, professor of communication and Carole Remick endowed director, published an article, An Examination of the Role of Mental Complexity and Power in Leadership, in the Journal of International Studies in Catholic Education.
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the relationships among mental complexity, leadership, and power in administrative leaders in Catholic colleges who are members of traditionally underserved populations. Findings have implications for higher education leadership and may be used to further understand power dynamics and effective leadership in colleges throughout the United States. A Kaneb Grant was used to for this study as well.
Congratulations to Aubrey Crosby, assistant professor in the writing program, for publishing her book, News Media and the Positioning of the Dakota Access Pipeline: Representing Protest by Bloomsbury publishing.
In it, Crosby argues that news media significantly reduced the scope of the NoDAPL movement, (re)framing the reality of it by fixating on select key events and by painting participants as a collective monolith of actors. Crosby shows how “protestors,” aligned with negative actions were associated with emotional and destructive intent, while law enforcement, despite their aggressive and ethically ambiguous actions, were reframed as justifiable in their attempts to maintain law and order. Though journalists may have had the opportunity and means to engage more critically with existing discourses, especially those surrounding Indigenous and Tribal sovereignty, Crosby ultimately argues that mainstream reporting made little effort, if any, to do so.
Chair of Education Priscilla Boerger and Chris Urbine, undergraduate education program director, attended the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) Conference where they presented, From Fear to Preparedness: Responding to the Realities of School Shootings, about the need to prepare teacher candidates on this tragic and sad reality of today's schools.
The incoming ATE president appointed Priscilla as Chair of the President's Commission on School Shootings Preparation and Chris will serve as the Co-Chair.
Mission in Action
To honor Martin Luther King, Jr., a week of events celebrated community service, teaching and engagement. The week culminated with a dinner and presentation of the MLK Legacy Awards presented to individuals who make significant contributions to advancing principles of justice, equality, and social change. Congratulations Jeff Joseph (Making an Impact), S. Zita Fleming, CSJ (Legacy), and Eddie Djatcha (Emerging Leader).

A wonderful mix of 41 faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students are preparing to travel around the world in service to their dear neighbors without distinction as part of the annual spring break service immersion program sponsored by the Center for Ministry and Service (CMS). Please join me in wishing them well and sending prayers as they act as our ambassadors in Dominican Republic and Jamaica with the Mustard Seed Communities, and in Alabama and Georgia for the Civil Rights Pilgrimage. What a wonderful embodiment of our mission and charism!
Save the date for the annual community celebration honoring these travelers: Regalos, on Thurs., March 26, at 5 p.m. in the CH Foyer. You won’t want to miss this special event.
Purchase tickets here. If you're able to support this program through the donation of a raffle prize or gift basket, please be in touch with Mary Lou Bozza by Mon., March 16.
Keep an eye out for an email about Heritage Week March 23-27, a time when we celebrate and honor our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, and their legacy. You will have time throughout the week to participate in activities that will deepen our engagement in mission and inclusivity.
CMS sends a heartfelt thank you to Cathy Fuller and Nina Forster for coordinating "The School of Health Sciences SOUPer Bowl of Caring Food Drive." The thoughtful food drive yielded several boxes and bags of non-perishable food items for the Hospitality Center as well as some generous cash donations. Thank you for supporting our students!

The Serving Thy Dear Neighbor Club hosted a kindness challenge by providing the community an opportunity to complete a good deed or act of kindness around campus, fostering a spirit of compassion, connection, and care that reflects the heart of our community.
