The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Track at Regis College is for nurses who want to work with psychiatric and mental health clients who are diagnosed and treated for the management of problems such as dementia, depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric problems. Students are taught to analyze patient's interactions with pharmacological agents and are given the opportunity to advance their education in the areas of pharmacology, pathophysiology, and health assessment with nursing theory, process and research.
The curriculum meets the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) criteria for certification as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
You can get your MSN through our hybrid program (synchronous and asynchronous courses) at our Weston campus, or through our fully online psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner MSN.
What Does a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner do?
- Psychiatric nurse practitioners typically provide mental health services including diagnostic evaluations, comprehensive treatment planning, psychotropic medication management, and therapy.
- The PMHNP treats individuals holistically, taking into account their overall health, medical conditions, and unique life circumstances. The role of a psychiatric nurse practitioner really builds on the nursing discipline and then brings it to the advanced practice level.
- PMHNPs work across many environments including settings where they provide consultation and training services as well as direct care.
- It’s important that prospective students understand the emphasis on medication management and the nursing aspect since if someone wants to provide only therapy, they would be better suited with another program such as counseling psychology.
