What is Diagnostic Medical Sonography?
Diagnostic medical sonography, commonly called ultrasound, is a multi-specialty imaging profession comprised of abdominal sonography, breast sonography, cardiac sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, obstetrics and gynecology sonography, vascular sonography, and other emerging clinical areas. These diverse areas utilize ultrasound as a primary diagnostic tool in their daily work. Sonography utilizes high frequency sound waves to visualize organs, tissues, and blood flow to identify normal anatomic structures and diagnose respective disease processes.

What is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer and a Vascular Technologist?
A diagnostic medical sonographer (ultrasound technologist) and vascular technologist is a highly specialized, nationally registered health care professional who performs diagnostic ultrasound exams producing quality images necessary for accurate diagnosis. They must exercise judgment to customize each sonogram to patients needs regarding body composition and pathology. Diagnostic medical sonographers and vascular technologists must possess and integrate a thorough understanding of patient care skills, ultrasound physics, cross sectional anatomy, hemodynamics, physiology, and pathophysiology.
What are the Career Opportunities?
Diagnostic medical sonographers and vascular technologists work including hospitals and outpatient imaging centers. New graduates can expect to work in the hospital setting upon graduation.
With the appropriate amount of clinical experience, diagnostic medical sonographers and vascular technologists may go on to become clinical instructors, departmental managers, ultrasound practitioners, educators, commercial application specialists and salespersons.
