Overview

To remain prepared for all emergency scenarios, the Regis College Police Department developed this web page to provide the most current information on how to respond to an active shooter on campus.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Regis College Police at 781.768.7111.

Summary

The actions of an armed intruder are highly unpredictable and evolve rapidly. Because these type of situations often occur quickly before law enforcement arrive and are about 15 minutes long – faculty, staff and students must be ready both mentally and physically.

Notification

In the event of an emergency, the university will attempt to alert the community through its emergency notification systems that sends messages by email, text and phone call. Please be sure to update your information in Regis Hub to receive alerts.

Determine the best Response

  • 1. Run

    Drawing of a person running surrounded by a circleYou should always be aware of your environment and make a mental note of the nearest two exits in any room or facility you visit.

    If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises. Be sure to:

    • Have an escape route and plan in mind;
    • Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow if you believe it offers you the best chance of survival;
    • Leave your belongings behind;
    • If possible help others escape;
    • As you’re leaving:
      • Prevent individuals from entering an area where the active shooter may be;
      • Keep your hands visible for police officers who are responding to the situation;
      • Follow the instructions of police officers;
      • Do not attempt to move wounded people; and
      • Call 911 when you are safe to provide further information about the shooter and their whereabouts.
  • 2. Hide

    Drawing of a person hiding under a table surrounded by a circleIf evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to find you and silence your phone and other electronic devices like radios, televisions and computers. Stay out of the shooter's range by lying flat on the floor when possible.

    Hiding places should:

    • Be out of the active shooter’s view by hiding behind or under large items like cabinets and desks;
    • Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction (i.e., an office with a closed and locked door); and
    • Not trap you or restrict your options for movement.

    If you are in an isolated room, prevent the shooter from entering by:

    • Locking the door;
    • Covering door windows or anything that allows a shooter to see into the room; and
    • Blocking the door with heavy furniture like desks, beds, dressers and bookcases;

    If evacuation and hiding out are not possible:

    • Remain calm; and
    • Dial 911, if possible, to alert police to the active shooter’s location.
      • If you cannot speak, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen.
  • 3. Fight

    Drawing of a person holding a stick surrounded by a circleAs a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:

    • Acting as aggressively as possible against them;
    • Throwing items and improvising weapons like scissors and even staplers or heavy books;
    • Yelling; and most importantly
    • Committing to your actions.
