Chemistry and Physics Department

The Department of Chemistry and Physics at Regis College offers a rigorous curriculum to prepare students for careers in chemistry, biochemistry, and related fields, as well as for post-graduate study. The favorable student-to-teacher ratio allows department members to work closely with our students—and to write strong letters of recommendation for students pursuing internships or jobs.

One of our primary goals is to give students hands-on laboratory experience, so our labs are designed with computers and instrumentation to facilitate this goal. In addition, work-study positions ranging from solution preparation to teaching assistantships provide excellent training for a career or graduate/professional school.

Our internships, tutorials, and independent studies also expose students to a wide variety of work environments. Regis is located close to Boston and has established many relationships with large corporations, hospitals, and chemical and biochemical research entities. As a result, students can secure exciting internship opportunities in emerging areas such as biotechnology and environmental science. Tutorials, meanwhile, allow students to learn about a topic not covered in traditional course offerings.

One of the most significant achievements for our students is Departmental Honors. To qualify for this distinction, candidates must apply for consideration in their sophomore year or first semester of their junior year. Students who meet the academic standards may elect an independent study. This is a research project that is carried out under departmental faculty supervision and leads to submission of an honors thesis that is defended before faculty.

Students in our department have completed internships with organizations such as:

  • Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
  • Genzyme
  • Biogen Idec
  • Mass. State Crime Laboratory (Sudbury)
  • Nova Biomedical
  • Raytheon (Andover)
  • Newton-Wellesley Hospital
