Interdisciplinary Arts Major

The Interdisciplinary Arts Major is a path of study created in the understanding that art professionals must be skilled in a variety of creative disciplines in order to be successful in the increasingly global arenas of arts related professions, industry, and government. On graduation, students will have acquired a basic knowledge of the three main creative disciplines—art, music and theatre. By specializing in one of the five Concentrations, students will have gained a more specific expertise in the chosen discipline: Art Administration, Dance, Music, Theatre or Visual Arts.

The Major

The Interdisciplinary Arts Major consists of 12 courses.

  • Six (6) core-courses that all Interdisciplinary Arts students enroll in, and through which they receive a basic understanding of art, music and theatre:
       • Introduction to Musicianship
       • Introduction to Theatre
       • Introduction to Visual Arts
       • Exploration of Purpose
       • Art Criticism
       • Capstone Project (an interdisciplinary arts project during senior year)
  • Six (6) courses within the chosen concentration.

The Concentrations

Students may elect one of the following:

  • Arts Administration
  • Dance
  • Music
  • Theatre
  • Visual Arts

What Can One Do With This Major?

The Interdisciplinary Arts Major helps students to become independent, multi skilled artists and performers, build careers in arts and cultural industries, and develop arts based projects in a variety of settings, including mental health, media, and education. It also prepares students for further, Graduate Arts education, eventually leading to an MFA (Master of Fine Arts).

Equally as important, the Interdisciplinary Arts Major serves those students who see the study of theatre, music, art and dance as a rich Liberal Arts education in itself and as such will utilize the study as preparation for employment or graduate education in areas other than the Arts.
