Description: A look at the common human experience of searching for meaning and the variety of responses given to this common search. Responses of significant religious thinkers and traditions will be examined. (not offered 2002-2003)

RS-107 Jesus: Myth & Reality

Description: Is Jesus really human? How can He be divine and human at the same time? What does Jesus mean to Christians today? What has He meant to Christians in the past? The course will deal with these questions and with the issues behind them.

RS-108 Theology Iv:social Justice

Description: This course challenges students to explore the application of Catholic social teaching to today?s world. As such, seniors will learn theology both within the classroom setting and on their own through independent research and experience outside of the classroom. Each quarter the students will write a paper on the issue that they have chosen to explore over the course of the year. They will then integrate their classroom learning with their research, thereby producing papers which together comprise the mid-semester and final exam grades. Finally, they will develop a plan of action for justice and put their learning into practice.

Description: An exploration of the various forms of love: friendship, romantic love, and Christian love with texts from a variety of authors.

Description: A study of the sacred writings of the Jewish tradition with emphasis on the historical, cultural, and religious backgrounds of the writings. Questions to be considered include: What is the historical message of the Bible? What is its religious message? Does the Bible have a message for today?

Description: A study of the New Testament, including Gospels and Epistles, with stress on contemporary understanding, taking into account the historical, cultural, literary, and religious backgrounds of these writings.

Description: A consideration of autobiographical writings which manifest lived experiences of religious belief. The material will focus on questions of self, freedom, love, loneliness, death, social responsibility.

Description: Study of the social dimension of religion including the role of community, of ritual, and the responsibilities of love and justice toward society at large.

RS-215 Catholicism: Cont. Persp.

Description: A study of key topics in Catholic theology: God, Jesus, church and worship. Emphasis will be placed on a contemporary understanding of Catholic thought in light of its historical sources. Particular attention will be paid to the question of the Churchs place in the modern world and the challenges it faces in such forms as pluralism, feminism and secularism. (not offered 2002-2003)

Description: An exploration of the problem of belief: The course will deal with human self-understanding and meaning. Students will confront faith and a delicate balance of personal decision and personal surrender. Unbelief will be examined.

Description: This course combines central themes of social justice and community building from both sociological and religious studies perspectives. Students will integrate foundational theories and the stories of exemplary role models in service work, with their own service learning experiences as they offer direct service and/or advocacy in religious or secular settings. This course will support students as they develop insights and techniques for putting ?faith into action.?

Description: A study of the role of symbol and ritual in contemporary life. This will include an examination of the significance of religious ritual as an instrument for expressing and developing human life. (not offered 2002-2003)

RS-305 Social Ethics

Description: Presents the principles of Social Justice, Christian Stewartship, and the relation of law and morality. Issues to be discussed: (1) morality and the economic order (e.g. consumerism, world hunger), (2) morality and the political order (e.g. terrorism, nuclear proliferation, criminal justice), (3) morality and tech- nology (e.g. DNA research, ecology, human experimentation). 13/JN:Class begins 1/2 includes two Sat.1/5&1/12

RS-308 The Medieval Vision

Description: An interdisciplinary exploration of the medieval world. Team-taught, the course offers a kaleidoscope of perspectives on this rich period, with history, philosophy, and theology as foundational. Added insights from a variety of disciplines supplement in- and out-of-class experiences, so that students will come to an understanding of a world with a vision of reality notable for its unity. Description: Studies the exclusion of women from positions of influence in religion in spite of their historically devoted support of religion.
