Regalos: Supporting Regis Service Around the Globe
Regalos – meaning gifts in Spanish – is a word that captures the essence of Regis service immersion trips. It is reflective of the way that Regis students share their talents and gifts with diverse communities all around the world. In following with the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, students travel to different places––Peru, Kenya, the U.S. Mexico Border, New Orleans, and the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota––to serve the dear neighbor.
Regis students and staff traveled to South Dakota to participate in a week-long service immersion trip on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (CRST) Reservation.
Students prepared for the trip by participating in a semester-long co-curricular course to deepen their knowledge of Native American history and modern day issues that face the Lakota Nation community. Prior to departure, students also participated in a Peace Circle, a Lakota ritual of peacemaking and conflict resolution.
On the reservation, the group coordinated a summer camp for Lakota youth in collaboration with Simply Smiles, a not-for-profit organization that provides bright futures for impoverished children and their families. The summer camp focuses on providing a fun experience while developing life skills. Regis students tutored workshops on wood work, dance, and art and led lacrosse and basketball clinics.
The Regis team also put together a presentation on the importance of a college education and the ways it can help Lakota youth effect change in their community.
As our service immersion programs grow, so does the need to fund them and make them accessible to all Regis students. It is due to this need that Regalos has become what it is today––our most central fundraiser event indispensable to upholding our commitment to service immersion trips. If you are interested in supporting our service immersion trips, please consider donating to our campaign.
