Practicum

The Practicum

The Communication Practicum is the perfect opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to an actual work environment. With the support of your classmates and professors the practicum is the opportunity for “real world” experience and a chance to discover your ability, passion and niche. It is the time to really hone in on your skills and master an area of interest through extensive research, writing, interviewing and presenting. With the core values taught in the program, I was able to discover and acquire new ideas while learning about the many different ventures in the field of communication. As part of my practicum I worked on creating a social marketing campaign for the City of Brockton, MA. I was given this opportunity through Brockton Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA), an underage drinking prevention program with Health Imperatives. The goal of Health Imperatives, a non-profit agency, is to improve the health and safety of individuals, families, and communities in Southeastern Massachusetts and across the State. Services range from family planning to emergency domestic violence/sexual assault resources to nutrition and home visiting programs for young parents.

One of my favorite quotes by George Bernard Shaw is: “Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Completing my practicum and thesis led me to discover who I am and what I would like to do professionally. This was an experience that truly challenged me, helping to positively shape my character.

My time at Regis College has supported me in becoming the confident, passionate, and tenacious individual that I am today.

Jocelyn YabutI had the opportunity to take my graduate practicum in the Creative Services Department at Channel 7 News in Boston. The practicum enabled me to meet new people, create professional networks, and long-time friendships. While undergoing the graduate practicum, I was still able to maintain my grades in other courses as well as carry on a job. The practicum course was flexible in terms of hours and, for me, an enjoyable one. My experience at Channel 7 News has prepared me for the field I want to be in which is the Television/Media. The practicum course is a great course that opens many doors.
