This is a primary course designed to provide students with a solid knowledge base and preparation in lactation. Participants will learn the theoretical concepts, principles and skills of human lactation based on the standards and recommended practices of the International Lactation Consultant Association. Nurses, midwives, pediatricians, nutritionists, lactation counselors, peer group leaders, doulas and childbirth educators will all benefit from this comprehensive human lactation course. Individuals who work with parenting families or are interested in a course to prepare for board certification will benefit from the course. Managers who are interested in improving breastfeeding skills among staff and breastfeeding support satisfaction and continuity among patients should consider sending employees.

By taking this course, students will learn how to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of human lactation
  • Discuss the nutritional components of human milk
  • Explain the physiology of milk transfer
  • Evaluate the mother/infant dyad for adequate milk production and milk transfer
  • Perform basic physical assessment of the newborn Identify barriers to successful lactation and at risk infants
  • Review interventions to promote healthy nutrition in mothers and infants
  • Review ethical considerations in healthcare
  • Perform a comprehensive lactation assessment
  • Develop a feeding plan for selected infants Integrate effective education and communication skills when working with families
  • Describe the political, legal and sociological influences effecting the lactation profession


Lactation Courses

This 48-hour course integrates anatomy, physiology, nutrition, physical assessment, growth and development, psychological aspects of pregnancy and childbirth as well as ethics and sociological concepts to provide participants with a complete theoretical framework to establish a foundation in the field of human lactation. You will be able to improve skills in breastfeeding assessment. This course contains content to prepare to take the certification exam of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners for those interested in pursuing a career. Selected readings, case studies and individual projects will be assigned.

Catherine Chalmers, RN, MSN, WHNP, CNM, IBCLC is the primary lecturer and course coordinator. All visiting faculty are IBCLC with extensive experience in a wide range of lactation practices
