42nd Biennial Sigma Theta Tau International Convention: November 16 - 20, 2013
Theme: Give Back to Move Forward
Hester C. Klopper, PhD, MBA, RN, new president of the Honor Society of Nursing gave the keynote address to the House of Delegates. This presidential call-to-action contains three principles: Serve Locally, Transform Regionally, and Lead Globally. Her four themes included: Servant Leadership, Connectedness, Transformation and Gratitude.
The 41st STTI convention was held at the beautiful Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. The theme for this year’s convention was “People and Knowledge: Connecting for Global Health”. There were more than 2,000 nurses in attendance from as many as 36 countries. Also in attendance were more than 200 nursing students who took part in activities which introduced them to STTI and the world of professional nursing.
The convention objectives were
- Apply and share nursing knowledge through global collaborations in sustaining the health of the world’s people.
- Develop global connections to promote the advancement of nursing science, practice, education, administration and policy development.
- Enhance leadership skills through collaborations in the global nursing community.
- Evaluate the use of technology to facilitate connection through knowledge for global health.
The conference was filled each day with exciting opportunities to learn about clinical improvements, cutting-edge research projects and leadership initiatives. There were two exhibit hall sections which displayed over 300 poster presentations on various topics including: evidence based practice, leadership, scientific review, geriatric nursing, maternal-child health and a showcase of Magnet hospital research.
Pat Grobecker and David Denneno were elected as delegates to represent our STTI chapter, Pi Epsilon and attended the conference. Our duties included being prepared for the conference by reviewing and studying all the material for the proposed bylaws, make nominations for candidates from the floor and cast the chapter’s votes for elected candidates.
On Tuesday, November 1st, we were ready to begin the voting process. There were opportunities to learn about the candidates during the week so this was a highlight to vote on these candidates. Pi Epsilon Chapter is in Region 15 which has a new regional coordinator, Valerie C. Sauda.
The new STTI President, Suzanne S. Prevost, PhD, RN, COI starts her term as the 29th president and the newly elected STTI president-elect is Hester Klopper, PhD, MBA, RN, RPN, FANSA.
