Certificate in Healthcare Administration

Program Description

As the U.S. Healthcare system undergoes unprecedented changes, and as the U.S. population ages, the demand for highly skilled health administration professionals is expected to rapidly grow. Health administrators will be needed to manage health services programs in a variety of settings such as:

  • Nursing Homes
  • Home Health Care Agencies
  • Private Practices
  • Mental Health Organizations
  • Rehabilitation Centers
  • Health Insurance Companies
  • Universities and Research Institutions
  • Public Health Departments

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2009, employment of medical and health services managers is expected to grow 16% from 2006 to 2016, which is faster than the average for all occupations. It is anticipated that jobs will grow for health administrators in a variety of fields such as:

  • Human Resources
  • Health Information Systems Management
  • Marketing and Public Affairs
  • Medical and Nursing Staff Management
  • Group Practice Management
  • Patient Care Services

In this dynamic, complex and evolving sector, health administrators will need to master certain competencies to direct the complex business of health care to ensure the delivery of high quality, accessible and cost effective care. The Graduate Certificate in Health Administration introduces students to the critical ethical, legal, social, political, and management issues in health administration. The certificate consists of five courses – three required courses and two electives. These five courses can also be applied toward fulfilling the requirements of the Master of Science in Health Administration. Elective courses are selected by the student from the Health Administration, Health Informatics, and Gerontology tracks.

Wednesdays, 3-4pm – Receive an admission decision "on the spot" during 30 minute appointments. Submit online at least 2 working days prior to your appointment: online application, 2 letters of recommendation, 500 word personal statement, resume. Bring to appointment: official transcripts.
