Regis Nursing honored again by the National League for NursingJuly 28, 2011
First in New England receives further designation as Center of Excellence in Nursing Education
For the second time, the National League for Nursing has recognized Regis College nursing programs as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education. Regis is one of eight schools to be honored for 2011-2015. It was one of just six schools so honored for 2008-2011. The designation distinguishes "those schools that demonstrate sustained, evidence-based and substantive innovation; conduct ongoing research to document the effectiveness of such innovation; set high standards for themselves; and are committed to continuous quality improvement.” The award, given in three categories, recognizes Regis for "creating environments that enhance student learning and professional development.”
Institutions that carry the COE designation are expected to serve as advisers and sounding boards to other nursing programs that seek to gain COE distinction. Cathleen Shultz, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, president of the NLN, noted that "The COE banner carries with it a responsibility to the entire academic community."
"We are very proud to be acknowledged in this way,” said Penelope Glynn, RN, PhD, Dean of the Regis College School of Nursing, Science, and Health Professions. "This reflects a deep commitment by Regis College as a whole to pursue and sustain excellence in student learning and professional development, to develop faculty expertise in pedagogy, and to advance the science of nursing education,” she added.
The emphasis in all of Regis College’s nursing programs is on high standards with accessibility through multiple-entry points. There are programs for students of all backgrounds or educational levels. One can start as an undergraduate or go with an unrelated BA degree into an entry-level master’s program in nursing. A practicing registered nurse can get a master of science in nursing. A person with an MS in nursing who wants further specialization can perform post-graduate work as a nurse practitioner, nursing leader, or nurse educator. The Doctor of Nursing Practice program provides practice-focused doctoral education for nurse practitioners, leaders and nurse educators.
There is also a 2-plus-2 option that allows community college undergraduates to transfer into the BS program at the junior level, making a private baccalaureate entry-level nursing education more affordable.
Regis Nursing also offers off-campus courses in 11 major hospitals (Lahey Clinic, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Boston Medical Center, New England Medical Center, Caritas Norwood, Newton Wellesley Hospital, Spaulding Hospital, Cambridge Health Alliance, Youville Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital), helping hospitals enhance job retention by promoting career development. Regis nursing faculty practice as nurse scientists in several of these hospitals in the development of ongoing clinical nursing research that cultivates evidence-based practice.
Additionally, Regis College nursing faculty and students provide health care in inner-city schools and Rosie’s Place to children and women without primary care. In an international outreach called the "Regis College Haiti Project,” Regis Nursing has begun advancing the education of Haitian nursing faculty in collaboration with the Haitian Ministry of Health and the US-based Partners in Health. In turn, these educators, having gained new competencies, will teach the next cohorts of Haitian nursing faculty and return to Haiti to bring their professional development to students there.

"In both the undergraduate and the graduate pathways of nursing excellence,” she continued, "the Regis Nursing faculty has produced demonstrably successful models of nursing education that make Regis College the best professional place to be for those who wish to advance in the field of Nursing.”
Regis College is a Catholic co-educational community that prepares undergraduate, graduate and continuing education students for engagement and service in a changing world. In the School of Liberal Arts, Education and Social Sciences and the School of Nursing, Sciences and Health Professions, approximately 1,600 students are enrolled in 17 undergraduate majors; 30 minors; 10 interdisciplinary pathways toward professional success; and master’s degree programs in biomedical science, communication cultural heritage, education, health administration, nursing, and regulatory and clinical research management, and a doctoral program in nursing practice. U.S. News and World Report ranks Regis in the top tier of universities with master’s programs in the North. The receipt of the NLN COE award for the second time affirms the College’s strategic graduate focus on health care.
