Students

The recent cold weather seems to have brought on a flurry of celebrations at Regis, both outdoors and indoors. On Nov. 25, right before Thanksgiving, our sophomores (Class of 2016) hosted a bonfire, complete with hot apple cider, s’mores and music, in the field near the Stamp Museum.

Congratulations, Class of 2014! I so enjoyed being with you to celebrate the occasion and to turn on the lights for this season of the Light of the World.

Regis students are now immersed in final exams. At the request of the SGA, the College has extended library hours during finals, including Dec. 7 until 8 p.m., Dec. 8 – 12 until 2:00 p.m., and Dec. 14 until 8 p.m. The library will continue to close at midnight on Fridays and revert to the normal hours on December 15 when things should be slowing down.

Additionally, the College is celebrating “Wellness Week 2013,” sponsored by the Office of Residence Life and Housing. All week there will be activities for you to participate in and relieve that stress caused by final exams!

This fall’s Creative Writing class gave a reading of their work at 3:45 p.m. on December 4 in CH 322. Thank you to English professor Pat Elliot for co-ordinating. It is so important to cultivate writing in today’s students and to provide occasions for this kind of artistic expression.

I have also heard of a wonderful video submitted as the final project for “Introduction to Public Health” this semester. The assignment asked students to identify a public health issue and to develop a public service campaign for the Regis campus. Four seniors in professor Barbara Waldorf's section of PBH 200 produced an in-house “awareness” YouTube video about the importance of mental health access for young people, and the video deserves kudos from both a communications and a public health vantage.

A Regis graduate student, Marta Azizi, who will receive her degree as a nurse practitioner in May, has been featured in The Boston Herald for learning smarter through the iPad. Read more here.

Malala is deservedly world famous now as a survivor of violent conflict and a brave and youthful global advocate of education for women. But right here in our own midst, some of our students have travelled long distances both geographically and in social situation to matriculate at Regis. I am happy to report that Shogofa Amini, whose family is originally from Afghanistan, has been happily enrolled at Regis since September. She and her “dear neighbors” were recently featured in a news article you may read here.

Education is about opportunity. Regis has also recently begun a new initiative called Regis Summer Scholars, a pre-college program for high school juniors and seniors, to help the flow of higher education and streamline the experience for rising students. The program spans just two weeks and participants can earn up to six college credits! This is a great opportunity for HS juniors and seniors to jump-start their college career by taking courses in both of our two schools, the School of Nursing, Science, and Health Professions, and the School of Liberal Arts, Education, and Social Sciences. Here are the program details:

  • July 14 through July 25, 2014
  • Six college courses included (see website for specific courses offered)
  • On-campus accommodations included

The School of Nursing, Science and Health Professions tells me there’s some interesting news out of Washington, D.C., regarding the BSN degree and master’s programs in Nursing. New data from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) show that graduates of entry-level baccalaureate (BSN) and master’s nursing programs are much more likely to have job offers at the time of graduation or soon after than are graduates from other fields. A national survey of deans and directors from U.S. nursing schools found that 59% of new BSN graduates had job offers at the time of graduation, which is substantially higher than the national average across all professions (29.3%). At four to six months after graduation, the survey found that 89% of new BSN graduates had secured employment in nursing.

At halftime at the Women’s Basketball game today, December 5, the College will celebrate our champion teams of the past two years: Women’s Tennis 2012, Women’s Basketball, 2012-2013, Women’s Tennis 2013, Men’s Tennis 2013.

Regis is included in the Colleges Of Distinction 2013-2014 Guidebook, and I was very pleased to read this entry: “Regis College provides a strong backbone and springboard for students on their journey into the world. It is a place where everyone grows, and decisions are made to help all students become the workers, leaders, doers, and thinkers of the future. Regis is a student-centered environment. Students are placed at the center and at the top of each and every priority list. They are treated as individuals, cared for respectfully, and solicited for their input regularly.”

Graduate Student Luncheon: I would also like to invite graduate students to join me for lunch on this Saturday, Dec. 7, in Morrison House, to celebrate the end of the semester.

As well, the College will hold a January, 2014 Graduate Student Orientation on Tuesday, January 14 from 2 to 6:30 p.m. The orientation will be open to all newly registered Graduate Students for Spring ’14 as well as any graduate students who began in Fall ’13 but did not attend our August Orientation.

Faculty & Staff

Cristina Squeff, Associate Professor of Mathematics, attended the Computer-Based Math Education Summit 2013, November 21-22 at UNICEF headquarters in New York City. The goal of the summit was, in collaboration with UNICEF, to kick-start global action on math education and serve as a catalyst for major change. It brought together leaders from industry, technology, education, and government, representing a range of countries, to address the question, “How deliver improved life chances worldwide by collaborating on a fundamental rethink of the math curriculum?” and to help map out a definitive path forward for fundamental math education reform to help students around the globe to flourish in the twenty-first century. Good for you, Cristina!

Come between exams, Andrea says, for a festive lunch and to celebrate the end of FA13 with a round-table show and tell of your favorite tech strategies. In addition to lunch and a list of the rTIP Spring and Summer offerings, we will have our now traditional rTIP Holiday App Tree decorated with iPad app licenses to thank you for your support.

During the spring 2014 semester the Oral History and Performance class under professor Katina Fontes (HI 311/511 (TH 311/511): Oral History and Performance) will create a documentary about the Regis Lay Apostolate – the Regis women who volunteered in Catholic mission schools during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, antedating and helping to inspire President John F. Kennedy’s idea of the Peace Corps. Students in the course will interview former Regis Lay Apostolate volunteers and create a documentary that will premiere at a special alumni event in April.

Director of Advising, Debra Cohen, informs me that the annual Majors Fair will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, 12:00-2:00 p.m., in College Hall Foyer. The Fair is being held earlier this year in order to allow faculty and student advisors more time to work with their students in preparation for declaring a major. The Major & Career Fair is a great opportunity to showcase all the majors, minors, and academic opportunities Regis College has to offer. The class of 2017 will be required to attend the fair as part of their First Year Seminar although the fair is open to any interested undergraduate students. Campus Past & Present

With Weston 300 evoking many memories, a recent article in Weston Town Crier featured the history of the Weston veteran’s post. In 1940, the Post received a letter from the War Department requesting formation of an Aircraft Warning Service Observation Post. A committee selected the Water Tower at Regis College, and the members manned the post and served as air raid wardens, auxiliary firemen and auxiliary police.

Yes, Advent has begun, the Christmas lights are shining, and Christmas is coming. Typically, Regis is thinking of others, as in the “extra” work of the staff of the Children’s Center and the Academy in producing a Clothing Drive December 2 – 20. The drive is looking for oats, boots, hats, gloves, other new or gently used clothing items in infant, child, or adult sizes. Collection boxes in Angela Hall, Walters Hall, and Campus Ministry. All donations will be distributed to charitable organizations that provide these items, free of charge, to those in need.

Labyrinth walkOn Monday, December 2, members of the Regis Community who wished to do so could walk a labyrinth whose ground plot was spread out on the floor of the College Hall Foyer. The labyrinth is a traditional “meditation” walk, and here is a photo of our archivist, Sister Mary Rita Grady, CSJ, PhD, walking the walk and concentrating on each step of the way.

President’s Office

President Hays and outgoing Board Chair Donna M. Norris MDYesterday I was on Cape Cod at the Daniel Webster Inn in Sandwich to join alums for their “Holly Fest.” But I got back to Regis in plenty of time to join our faculty, directors, and Regis Trustees for our annual Christmas party, held this year in Morrison House. Our grand old house really looked like Christmas, too, thanks to all the hard work of our staff! Everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. On the left is a photo of our Board Chair, Donna M. Norris, MD, who is finishing a term in that office. Over the last several years, Donna has shepherded and overseen major decisions for the good of the College. I am personally very grateful for Donna’s mentoring during these first two years of my presidency … and that she will remain a member of the Board going forward.

Most of today, December 5, the Regis Board of Trustees, AC, and I are participating in the December meeting. Today, too, I am very happy to welcome our new chair, Ms. Joan Shea, who has worked so productively to lead the Facilities Committee and who is admirably suited to guide us as we implement our Master Plan.

Next week, Dec. 11-13, I shall be in New York to attend the Health e-Villages Board Meeting and to attend the reception for our New York alums, including Eileen McCormick Langenus ‘78 and her husband, our Trustee Peter Langenus, Esq., at the Union Club

We have several other important Christmas festivities to mark at Regis, so don’t forget:

  • Annual Christmas Concert, December 7 and December 8, 3-4 p.m.
  • The Holly Tea, December 8 12:30 -2:30 p.m., followed by Christmas Concert
  • Christmas Luncheon for Staff and Faculty, 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, in College Hall Foyer. In celebration of Christmas and its spirit of giving, at this event we customarily welcome donations to the Sisters of St.Joseph in residence at Bethany Health Care Center and St. Joseph Hall in Framingham. If you wish to donate but cannot attend the luncheon, drop off your contribution at the Office of Human Resources, by December 16.


May your Advent days be peaceful, joyful, quiet and full of anticipation. I had thought this week was going to be too busy to send out the President’s Notes, but we were able to manage and stay on schedule. Good luck to all our students and much success in final exams. The next issue of President’s Notes will probably not be out until January; however, I shall be in touch before then in a diffent medium! Christmas is coming!
