President's Notes III.17May 1, 2014
Hello, everyone. The season of spring rain is upon us, but sunshine will follow. Eastertide! It’s great to see the trees blossoming and our students and faculty conducting their final, doctoral discussions and presentations, with undergrads entering into the beauty of our campus and taking a breath as they go into final exams.
Eastertide is a season of change.
By now, you may have heard of our decision to close the Children’s Center and Academy Kindergarten at the end of June. This was a very tough decision to make – the toughest I’ve had to make in my first three years as President of Regis. It was made for reasons of low program enrollment. The number of children enrolled in these programs has dramatically declined in recent years. It wasn’t too long ago that we had waiting lists for the Center and the Academy. Today, despite the high quality of the programs, we have empty seats. Be assured that we are working closely with program teachers and with parents to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.
One of our Trustees, Jane Cronin Tedder ’66, sent Dr. M. J. Doherty this photo from Hagia Sophia in Turkey where Jane has been touring early Christian sites. But today I heard there were riots in Istanbul for May Day. Hope Jane is safe.

Marla Botelho, Chief Information Officer, has done a one-minute CIO video spot on the topic of campuses, computer technology, and consumerism addressing the wide-open and flourishing market of devices and applications CIOs today have to select from to serve the needs of their particular campus. The video, posted on Educause online magazine’s website, can be viewed here.
The Department of History, World Languages and Cultural Heritage is proud to announce the publication of Associate Professor, Kate Edney’s chapter in the book, Gestures of Music Theater: The Performativity of Song and Dance, edited by Dominic Symonds and Millie Taylor and published by Oxford University Press. Kate’s chapter is called “Tapping the Ivories: Jazz and Tap Dance in ‘Jelly's Last Jam’ (1992), and it explores how tap dance, minstrelsy, and the performance of Gregory Hines in “Jelly’s Last Jam” signifies, critiques, and exceeds normative expressions of African-American identity to reveal the absence of blackness on the contemporary musical stage and to reassert the right of African-Americans to represent themselves and their histories in performance. In addition, Professor Edney presented her article in progress “Making Sense of Integration: Sing Out Sweet Land (1944), African Americans, and the Democratic Ideal” at the Mid-America Theatre Conference (March 6-9, 2014) in Cleveland Ohio. Good work, Kate.

Congratulations to each of you! While the Regis Community is reluctant to say good bye, we are delighted to know that you are embarking on new adventures. We wish you health and happiness.
Regis is hosting the New England Association of Chemistry Teachers' Central Division meeting on Saturday, May 3. Associate Professor of Chemistry Leslie Bishop, NEACT Central Division chair, will share her experiences introducing elementary students to chemistry activities. She and Associate Professor of Mathematics Cristina Squeff will also share the overall quest of providing math and science enrichment to young children. Assistant Professor of Biology Fran Power-Charnitsky is also a part of the enrichment team.
Writing Center Coordinator Daryl Morazzini has been invited to join the Boston Rhetoric and Writing Network (BRAWN) Summer Institute for the 2014, which will be held on the last weekend in May for three days at Northeastern University. BRAWN invites only 45 applicants out of the 300 plus applications they get, so we are all happy Daryl will be participating and send him warm congratulations.
The following Regis faculty members have participated in the online training and faculty development program that Dr. Sabrina Johnson-Taylor of IT has developed for Regis in accordance with NEASC and best-practices for online learning. Kaitlynn Malinowski Arvidson, Ed.M., has joined our staff as Career Placement Manager, Graduate Programs. This is a new service at Regis and Kaitlynn will help ensure that professional opportunities and employment options are made known to our graduate students throughout their career here. Welcome aboard in this new role, Kaitlynn!
We all know that university teaching is not a “popularity contest,” but that said, love is another matter. In the recent Student Choice Awards program, there were four nominees in the “Most Beloved Faculty Member” category. Biology professor Mary Lombard was the nominee from SNSHP, and philosophy and religious studies professor Bernard Jackson, religious studies professor Ernie Collamati, and English professor Joseph Dequattro were all nominated from SLAESS. Congratulations to all, and notably Ernie who was declared the winner.
Professor Collamati was also interviewed by FOX 25 TV on Saturday April 26 regarding the canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II last Sunday. President Emerita Mary Jane England, MD, was interviewed on the same subject by The Boston Globe here.
On a different subject – that of the Department of Children and Families in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Mary Jane was also interviewed on WBZ Radio yesterday morning.
Many members of the Regis College community participated in the 5k Walk sponsored by Health Services and had a lot of fun doing it. Check out this link for a slide show with music of the event; you need to provide your name and password to open it.

Associate Professor of English Julia Lisella has had her newest collection of poetry accepted for publication. The collection is called Always and is being published by WordTech Editions in the Fall. Congratulations, Julia.
Faculty member Michael Jackson presented a paper called “'The Tools of Ares: The Morality of the Use of New Weapons Technologies - An Assessment of the Neutron Bomb Case of 1978 and the Use of Drone Warfare Technology in the 21st Century” on April 18, 2014, at the Western Political Science Association Annual Conference held in Seattle.
Faculty members Ellen di Bonaventura and Jan Heavey oversaw the annual Nutrition Poster session on Wednesday, April 30th, in College Hall Foyer from 4:30-6:00 PM. Students from the two evening Nutrition classes (NU 205) presented the latest research and trends in nutrition.
Student Affairs staff concluded their four-part professional development series for faculty and staff with Erin Wisniewski (on the left) presenting “how to support our international students.”
Dean Penelope Glynn, PhD, RN, compliments faculty member Erin McQuaid for the terrific job she did organizing the science fair for 143 students from all over District V. The projects were testimony to what these young people can do and do do as they prepare to transition into high school, and some of the projects were quite sophisticated, for example, testing the effects of a WI-FI hot spot on living plants, identifying the ph of 7 bottled waters, the building of a lie detector machine, and the generation of electricity using the power of water. Professor Anne Powers provided oversight for the fair and gathered the judges, some of whom were our graduate nursing students! Erin and Anne were able to accommodate a last minute entry of nine projects from Rockland as well.
We are experiencing a stellar set of doctoral research defenses in Nursing as our doctorate of nursing practice students present their work. In the last issue of President’s Notes I mentioned Kechinyere Iheduru-Anderson DNPc, MSN, RN, CWCN, who successfully defended her thesis entitled “The Transition Experiences of West African Internationally Educated Nurses as They Transition into Practice in the U.S. Healthcare Settings,” and faculty members Karen Crowley and Valerie Hunt have told me that the following have successfully completed their doctoral research defenses in the past two weeks:
- Cynthia Bashaw MS, APRN-BC, FNP, DNPc who presented on “Compassion Fatigue in Primary Care Nurse Practitioners”
- Jeanette Livelo RN, MS/MBA, DNPc who presented on “Knowledge, Attitudes, and Experiences of Filipino-American Registered Nurses in the U.S. towards End-of-Life Care”
- Gabrielle Abelard, who presented on “Nurse Experience of Providing Videoconferencing Technology Telemental Health”
- Kathleen Adee, who presented on “Adults Who are Homeless and Their Perceptions of the Health Services Provided Through a Nurse-Managed Clinic at a Shelter for Homeless Adults”
- Anne Fryer, who presented on “Perceptions of Newly Licensed Nurses' Transition into Their First Professional Role”
- Emily Smith, who presented on “Academic Progression Barriers: Redundancy in Nursing Education
Coming up on this Saturday, May 3, Mary McDougall will present her doctoral research on “Nurses’ Experience of Assessing Older Adult Patients for Risk of Delirium in an Acute Care Hospital Setting,” as will Eileen Costello on “The Lived Experience of Placing a Child in Residential Care.”
Undergrads Sarah Schlow ‘14, Siobhan McLaughlin ‘17, Sidney Keilty ‘15, and Matt Norton ‘17 were first-time volunteers at the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21 and part of the Hydration Station team at Mile 14 in Wellesley. Chizu Shiono, Admission Associate for International Recruitment and captain of the Hydration Station volunteer team, tells me that Regis was represented very well and the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) thanks our students for their service. We thank them, too!
The athletics department held its annual Awards Banquet on Friday, April 25 in the Fine Arts Center. I presented the Regis-Casserly awards to seniors Stacy Burns from Waltham (below left) and Jeff Parrish from Framingham (below right). Previously known as the Mother Regis and Casserly awards, they are the highest awards presented to a graduating female and male senior student-athlete. The recipients of the awards must excel not only in athletics, but also must show evidence of academic excellence by maintaining an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and must be involved in the life of the College by showing excellence in leadership and service. Our women’s lacrosse team played Elms College in the NECC semi-finals last evening and won! Undaunted by the cold and rain-soaked Wednesday, twelve different Regis players registered at least one point as top-seeded Regis defeated No. 4 Elms College, 20-8, in a New England Collegiate Conference Women's Lacrosse Semifinal matchup. Congratulations to the champions and their coaches!
Also, check out the video on our Summer Scholars program for high school students, which will enable high school juniors and seniors them to explore academic interests, make lasting friendships, and experience a bit of college life at Regis.
On April 22 I hosted U. S. Representative Katherine Clark on campus with her aides Jen McAndrew and Natalie Kaufman. This was a great opportunity to fill our new Representative in on Regis’s mission and thriving campus, and we did so through a meeting with our Academic Affairs Deans and Associate Deans in my office. In the photograph, Vice President, Institutional Effectiveness, Susan Tammaro, PhD (on the right), conversed about our programs while giving Representative Clark a campus tour, and the Representative later joined faculty and staff at a gathering in Morrison House.
A panel of experts from the Joslin Clinic, known worldwide for its work in the treatment of diabetes, spoke at the Regis College Health Lecture Series on Wednesday, April 23. I was very pleased to have Martin J. Abrahamson, MD, Catherine Carver, MS, ANP, CDE, Anne Rizzotto, MEd, RD, LDN, CDE, Stephanie Edwards, MPH, and Bridget Stewart, LPD, MBA, on our campus, and a packed, engaged audience. This unique series of lectures is designed to challenge the community to develop new skills to build awareness of contemporary health and wellness issues and learn to effect positive change. Topics for the Fall 2014 season include “Anxiety/Drug Abuse/Panic Attacks/Treatment” and “What is in Your DNA? Genetics and Cancer Treatment.”
On Tuesday morning, April 29, I attended the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts (AICUM) annual meeting at Boston College, and I was introduced as a new member of AICUM’s Board of Directors. AICUM provides a public voice on key policy matters that concern private independent colleges and universities in Massachusetts.
Later on Tuesday I enjoyed meeting students at “Pizza with the President” and was pleased that our Board Chair, Joan Shea, was able to join me.
The MetroWest STEM Education Network quarterly meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 2, 8:30 a.m. at Framingham Public Schools. Regis representatives will be attending and on the agenda will be Framingham’s new STEAM initiative as well as a recap of Wellesley’s first Science & Technology Expo.

Father Paul Kilroy informed me that Aubrey Byron ‘09, a Nursing student who went on the 2009 Alternative Spring Break trip to Peru, received an invitation to the Peace Corps and will be leaving for Zambia, Africa, in June. She was inspired to do this through her trip to Peru and Father Paul was a reference for her volunteer experience. Congratulations, Aubrey. These roots go deep into the Regis College Lay Apostolate of the 1950s, which helped President Kennedy decide to launch the Peace Corps itself. Last week we held a “reunion,” in fact, of our lay apostles.
Reunion Weekend 2014 is just around the corner. All the class years ending in the numerals 4 and 9 will be welcomed back to campus to enjoy a weekend full of festivities. There are wonderful activities planned for Saturday, May 17, including the always popular Parade of Classes, the Alumni Luncheon, and all alumni dinner and dancing under the tent. The Class of 1964 celebrates its fiftieth reunion starting with a Reunion Liturgy and induction into the Golden Tower Society on Friday, May 16.
The Corporate Members of the Regis College Board have named Elizabeth Cadigan, MSN, RN, of Middleton to the College’s Board of Trustees. Cadigan is Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer for Cambridge Health Alliance, an integrated health system serving Cambridge, Somerville and Boston’s metro-north communities. Among her many achievements at CHA is the implement-tation of a staff nurse council that empowers CHA’s nurses and gives them a voice in practice, policy, quality, and safety. Prior to joining CHA, Cadigan held numerous leadership positions in both community and academic medical centers, including Quincy Medical Center and Boston Medical Center. She received a bachelor of science in nursing from Salve Regina University and master of science in adult/gerontological nursing from Boston University, and holds Nurse Executive, Advanced certification.

Graduate Hooding Ceremony
Hooding for graduate students will take place on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Tent on the Great Lawn. Faculty of the graduate programs will preside, and members of the Regis College community are welcome to attend. Family members of the graduates have been notified separately by the graduates themselves. Faculty robing will occur at 6:30 p.m. in the Coral Room in the FAC, Room 201. Dr. Claudia Pouravelis will lead the procession to the Tent.
Rachel Abarbarnel ’14 has been named valedictorian of the class of 2014. Congratulations, Rachel, and we all look forward to hearing your message to your classmates at Baccalaureate on May 9!
Baccalaureate begins at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014 in the Fine Arts Center. Continental breakfast will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m.. Administrative Council members, as well as Staff at the Directors’ level, are also invited to robe and process. To assist us in forming the procession and providing sufficient seats, Directors are asked to inform the Academic Affairs Office if they are planning to robe. The Commencement Procession will begin in College Hall Foyer promptly at 9:45 a.m..
Please plan to arrive on campus by 9:00 a.m. Parking for Faculty and Staff will be at Weston High School. Shuttles will be running throughout the day to bring you to Regis College and back to your car after Commencement. Please allot enough time to park and be transported to campus since families of the graduates will also be using the shuttles once parking on campus is full.
Next week will be a busy and wonderful week on campus concluding the semester. I’ll be on roller skates beginning with the Hooding on May 6, meetings on May 7, the Board Meeting on May 8, and then Baccalaureate and Commencement. Let us enjoy our students and their families, celebrating their graduations, and appreciate one another for the care with which we have delivered them to this achievement. I thank you all, our faculty and staff, for your great dedication.
