President's Notes 2.23May 30, 2013
Hello again. The season of awards, achievements, promotions, reunions and new beginnings keeps on rolling!
This year’s All-Class Reunion focused on years ending in the numerals 3 and 8, and alums thoroughly enjoyed the Parade of Classes. With us was a member of the Class of 1938, Virginia Caldbeck Hogan, looking absolutely terrific as she rode along in one of our golf carts en route to an event. Congratulations Virginia! We were thrilled to have you on campus.
The Class of 1963, of course, was celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, and Jane DeMarco Wittreich, Ann Hughes Restivo, and Kathleen Hickey Lennon enjoyed carrying their class banner in the Parade of Classes.

Susan Erickson, adjunct instructor in the Graduate Education Program, has been named Mass Audubon Environmental Teacher of the Year. Her citation reads that she…."is committed to community based-learning experiences that empower students, giving them voice in their communities through a rigorous approach to the academics paired with a strong belief that knowledge and skills must be applied to transform learning and learners." Susan earned her MAT at Regis and has had journal articles published about her work with students. She teaches in the Concord School system.
Last week Governor Deval Patrick announced the nomination of three administrative judges on the Industrial Accident Board at the Massachusetts Department of Industrial Accidents (DIA), including Sabina T. Herlihy, (REGIS ’81). Reconnecting with Regis, Sabina joined me and Chief Development Officer Miriam Finn Sherman for lunch on May 22. Dean of Students Kara Kolomitz has announced the promotion of James Guaragna ’11, ‘13 to the position of Director of Orientation and Communication Management for Student Affairs. James will assume his new responsibilities on June 1, 2013. Says Kara: “Having a bachelor of arts in communication and a newly minted master of science degree, James is well positioned to lead our division into innovative social media strategies and a reinventing of new student and transfer orientation.”
Faculty, Staff & Trustees
Our colleague Marie McCarthy, MS, RN, Vice President for Education, Lawrence Memorial /Regis College Nursing and Radiography Program, has been awarded the 2013 Nursing Excellence Award from Nurse.com. Her award was announced on Monday, May 13, at a gala event at the Boston Marriott, Newton. She was one of 30 regional finalists from New England. Marie will now go on to be a national finalist. She is currently spearheading a move of the associate degree program toward a BSN program. Working with HHS, she helped create dedicated education units, tuition reimbursement and academic bridge programs, a mentoring program for new managers and the Center for Professional Development. As an international nursing consultant, Marie also led the establishment of the Gouna Nursing Institute, the first two-year degree program in Egypt. And as a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, she has contributed to major nursing initiatives in the state. She is a consultant for the state’s Department of Higher Education and a site visitor for the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Congratulations, Marie, and best of luck in the national finals!
Professor Mary Anne Vetterling PhD (Spanish) has provided a thumbnail sketch of Regis connections that were evident at the annual awards ceremony of the local chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, which was held on May 15 in College Hall Foyer. This Awards Ceremony was started by Joyce Haggerty, Regis '56 and moved to Regis when Dr. Haggerty retired from teaching at Framingham State about fifteen years ago, and it was next organized by Pat Donahue McElhiney, Regis '71, and George Watson who was a student of Ana Velilla (retired Regis Spanish Professor) when she was an instructor at Boston University. This year another Regis graduate – Shannon Myron, Regis '93, Spanish Teacher at Wellesley High School, and Professor Vetterling’s former student – had a special role in the ceremony: Shannon won the award to spend the Summer studying in Granada, Spain. Ole! (which, I understand, is an expression of encouragement and approval that translates as “Hooray!”)
The members of the Corporation of Regis College named Michael Halloran of Weston and John Tegan Jr. of Boston to the college's Board of Trustees. Michael Halloran is formerly the global head of technology investment banking at Deutsche Bank Alex Brown, and his wife Carolyn is a Regis grad, class of 1993. John Tegan is the husband of Lorraine DeStefano Tegan ’63, who served on our Board from 2006 to 2012. Weston resident joins Regis College's Board of Trustees.
Susan Tammaro, PhD, Dean of Institutional Research and Assessment arranged a retreat on May 29 (yesterday) aimed at re-imagining our Student Success Center to meet the needs of contemporary students in ever more astute ways. Visitor Frances Keech from MCPHS, whose current field of study is student success in undergraduate education, led Associate Dean Peggy Cross, Kathryn Anastasia, Susan M. Erickson, Marcia Kuchta, Mary Johnston, and Karin Plumadore in various discussions and activities.
Associate Dean David Gilmore has given me a wonderful progress report on developments in the Medical Imaging programs as well as the Nuclear Medicine lab. The lab room renovation is almost complete, and Northeast Electronics’ CEO John Shaw has been on campus personally with his install team beginning on Tuesday last to install the Nuclear Medicine camera, called a Gamma Camma. John and Northeast Electronics are donors of this equipment, for which we are most grateful. The room/lab will have an interactive class-room in it so that class and lab can occur at the same time. Marla Botelho and ITS have collaborated and found the right electronic equipment so the Nuclear Medicine program can expand on what we started this year with the iPad. Lauren Shanbrun has moved almost all her instructional material to the iPad with interactive learning apps, quizzes, e-books, etc… and, on top of that, had an abstract accepted by Society of Nuclear Medicine to deliver a presentation at its international meeting next month in Vancouver. Way to go, all of you!

Kathryn, Professor Collamati, Sister Betsy Conway, CSJ, and ten of our students should be just about wrapping up this year’s “Immersion” trip abroad and be on their way home.
Dr. Linda Luciano contacted me to say that she defended her dissertation on April 10, 2013 and she and her twenty-three classmates – the first cohort in many years in which all participants successfully completed the program – received the doctorate on May 13 from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. Linda had interviewed me last year as part of the research for her dissertation and looks wonderful in her new doctoral robes.
Over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27) I was in San Antonio, Texas, giving the commencement address at the University of Texas Health Science Center. My address was entitled “The Neighborhood of Care and the Emergence of Nursing on the Global Stage.” The day I arrived, San Antonio had flash floods from an abundance of rain, and people were standing or sitting on top of their cars as the river rushed by. Some people were displaced from their homes but, mercifully, the waters also dissipated quickly and did not interfere with the graduation. The event was wonderful, and I was pleased that the graduates really seemed to listen to my speech. I guess there’s still a bit of the professor in me. It’s good for all of us to go off campus and see what other universities and higher education programs are doing.
On May 23, Mr. and Mrs. John Kaneb (Ginny ’57), at left with me and Miriam Sherman, were on campus for the Kaneb Luncheon to celebrate this year’s Kaneb Scholars and their faculty development and sabbatical projects. John was very impressed with our iPad and digital pedagogy initiatives and those who described all that we have done. Thank you all!
On Tuesday May 21 I joined Vice President Tom Pistorino and members of the Sasaki team to discuss our Master Plan with members of the Weston Planning Board. The conversation went very well and we are able to proceed with the items we presented.
Executive Assistant Katya Rego in my office has been coordinating the College’s participation in the Weston 300 celebrations this year and has produced an informative power point to show on her iPad as she hosts a table at the Field Day on Saturday, June 1 at Weston High School, with the help of Amy Scott from the Children’s Center, Jill Rosen from LLARC, and Josh Blumenthal from Athletics.
And, since many of you have asked for a photo of Olivia, my granddaughter, I am too happy to oblige. Here she is - my burgeoning ballerina!
The next issue of President’s Notes should be out on June 13 – number 24 in series 2, and after that the Notes will take a brief summer break and begin number 1, series 3 in August!
