President's Notes 1.25July 12, 2012
My second year as President has begun, and June and July brought us so much good news I hardly know where to begin!
First of all, at the heart of Regis as an educational institution, two of our faculty members were named “teacher of the year” in their respective fields by their national professional organizations. David Gilmore of Boston, Assistant Professor & Chair of the Medical Imaging Program at Regis College, was named outstanding educator in nuclear medicine technology at the Annual Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) Conference, held in Miami in June. Two of his students were honored for their presentations in the field, and one student received the Paul Cole scholarship from the SNM. Mary-Anne Vetterling of Lexington has been named Teacher of the Year: College/University Level by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). She received the award at the organization’s annual meeting July 9 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Jayson Baker of the Communication Department received his doctorate from the University of Rhode Island. The title of his dissertation is "ImagiNations: The Cinematic and Literary Revival of Henry James (1995-2001)." Congratulations, Dr. Baker!
The Board & The Congregation
On June 14, our Board of Trustees enjoyed a wonderful retreat experience as they worked on the Strategic Plan, discussed the future of the East Campus, and planned significant activities in Institutional Advancement.
On June 24, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston participated in the Transition of Leadership for their congregation. Over 500 sisters, associates, colleagues, friends, and family members were present at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Newton, MA for the Mass of celebration. The women who have been elected by the Congregation to serve in the ministry of leadership for the next six years are: Rosemary Brennan, CSJ, Marylou Cassidy, CSJ, Maureen Doherty, CSJ, Margaret L. Sullivan, CSJ, Roseann Amico, CSJ, Gail Donahue, CSJ, and Patricia E. McCarthy, CSJ. Both Sister Rosemary and Sister Maureen are on our Regis Board and participated in the June 14 retreat.
The Haiti Project was awarded a grant of $463, 000 by the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund to educate faculty at six Haitian nursing schools. The grant will help provide 24 Haitian nurse educators with a master’s degree in nursing. These teachers are expected to pass that education along to 3,300 students over the period of the grant. Congratulations to Nancy Street, Cherlie Normilus, and Alexis Przybylski Lawton who worked so hard to help this happen. I am pleased to report that I received lovely congratulations on this, too, from PIH Co-Director, Ophelia Dahl, a Regis honorary degree recipient (2006), saying that the announcement from the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund “speaks volumes of the Regis program” and makes “an excellent force of positive motivation” for all who are working to help Haiti.
The School of Nursing, Science and Health Professions has received a competitive $200,000 HRSA grant for our Nurse Faculty Loan Program.
The 2012 Orientation for the Class of 2016 will occur on July 20-21, and a dynamic schedule of events, activities and lectures is all arranged to welcome our incoming students and their parents. Besides talks for students whose titles invite my curiosity – “Even You Need a Push,” “The Naked Roommate,” “The Skin You’re In” – there will be a dinner and a dance, several sessions of academic advising and registration, an opportunity to join the Glee Club (which is going to Spain next year), and I will give a welcome to parents at 9:45 a.m. in the Fine Arts Center and to students at 10:15 a.m. on July 20 under the tent! During their “orientation,” parents will hear from dean Kara Kolomitz and Peggy Cross about the academic marketplace, academic support services, campus identity, and FERPA.
The 2012 capstone project of one of our DNP students, Stacy Christiansen, has been selected for a triple play: 1) Stacy’s project, called “MyPapp,” will be a podium presentation at MIT’s App Inventor Summit tomorrow (July 13) in Cambridge as on the subject of "Apps for Social and Humanitarian Good." 2) In September, it will be a poster presentation at the DNP conference in St. Louis. And 3) her article entitled "MyPapp; A Mobile App to Enhance Understanding of Pap Testing," co-authored with Dr. Ralph Morelli of Trinity College, has been accepted for publication in the journal CINplus, Computers, Informatics, Nursing, in the coming year.
Regis and Mass Bay Community College have successfully signed an articulation agreement that will connect us through transfer students in several fields. Together we are exploring a further international connection, too; but more about that later.
Campus Technological Enhancement
In one of our strategic projects to enhance technological capacity, Regis has made a lease agreement with Verizon, and today, July 12, Verizon is installing a cellular tower on the roof of College Hall to improve cell phone reception. That plus a 500% increase in our wireless access points (interior and exterior) this summer means that faculty, staff and students will no longer have to hang out windows or climb trees in order to connect!
We welcomed Malcolm Asadoorian the new Dean of the School of Liberal Arts Education and Social Sciences, officially on July1. Malcolm is full steam ahead meeting with administrative staff and faculty as he sets his goals and agenda for the fall of 2012.
Susan Tammaro, Dean of Institutional Research and Assessment has received word that her paper entitled “High Hopes, Devilish Details, and the Regis Reality: Our Experience Developing, Implementing and Assessing a Powerful General Studies Curriculum” has been accepted for presentation at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Association for General & Liberal Studies (AGLS) to be held in Portland, Oregon, September 20-22, 2012.
Dean of Students Kara Kolomitz and her staff are planning to hold an information session in the near future updating faculty and staff on FERPA (Family Education Rights & Privacy Act of 1974). Stay tuned for announcement of the times and places.
We have also seen some transitions in staff as Associate Vice President Sarah Barrett and Dean of Student Life and Ministry Rosemary Mulvihill, RSM, have moved on, and Pauline Cunniff, Director of the Children’s Center, has announced that she will be leaving that post. Those changes, along with the opening of the Center for Student Services and Regis’s continuing growth, have prompted some personnel restructuring on my part as well. As we closed out 2011-2012 with record enrollment, here is the overview of personnel appointments made this year directly related to the Strategic Plan:

As we prepare for academic year 2012-2013 we are all lined up to conduct our NEASC Self-Study, to advance our technology even more deeply into the digital age, and to continue rolling out the implementation of our Strategic Plan.
