President’s Notes III.15April 3, 2014
Our biggest news on campus is the inclusion of Regis in “The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED),” which is a Consortium of colleges and schools of education committing resources to work together to undertake a critical examination of the doctorate in education (EdD) across the nation and abroad through dialog, experimentation, critical feedback and evaluation. This year Regis is a member of the third cohort of institutions to join CPED, the only one in Massachusetts. Prior cohorts include among current members the following institutions in Massachusetts: Boston College, Northeastern University, and University of Massachusetts-Amherst. As you can see, we are in good company, and that within a year of launching our EdD program. Special thanks to Vice President Malcolm Asadoorian, PhD, Dr. Ray McCarthy, and Heidi Hoffman. This year’s cohort also includes two Canadian universities and one in New Zealand.

As well we have proudly announced our new Master’s Program in Professional Writing for our digital age. The program directed by faculty member Stephanie Schorow pays special attention to social media. Here’s the story.
Tonight we welcome a special guest speaker to campus, Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, who will discuss equity in healthcare and the issues of healthcare reform. The lecture will be followed by discussion and book signing of his new book, Breaking Ground, My Life in Medicine. The event is free and open to the public. Many thanks to Evan Maloney in the Grad Affairs office for organizing this event.
As well, Dr. Ira Byock, one of the foremost palliative care physicians in the country and author of The Best Care Possible, a Physician’s Quest to Change Care through the End of Life, will keynote a forum, “Envisioning and Achieving a Brighter Future – Unprecedented Challenges & Opportunities” here on Monday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Presented by Regis College in partnership with the Parmenter Foundation, the event is the first in what is expected to be an annual Community Collaboration for Change. This public forum is designed for healthcare educators, students and providers, business leaders, policymakers, faith leaders, and the general community. It will be followed by breakout sessions and roundtable discussions for professionals in specific disciplines. Advance online tickets are strongly suggested and can be reserved at www.regiscollege.edu/drbyock. Advance tickets are $25 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students.

Assistant Professor of English and Writing Program Director Anthony D’Aries, MFA and Lecturers Jason Clemence, MA and Marilyn Matis, PhD, have had a panel accepted at UMass Boston’s Conference on the Teaching of Composition. The panel is entitled “Writing Like a Reader: Style, Mechanics, and Literary Thinking in the Regis College Writing Program” and will be held at UMass Boston on April 26. In other exciting Writing Program news, Lecturer Joseph De Quattro, MFA was nominated for the “Most Beloved Professor” category for the Regis College Choice Award Show. This show is organized by the Campus Activity Board (CAB) and the Freshmen Class of 2017 along with Student Programming and Leadership.
The Office of Student Affairs has announced the return of the Co-Curricular Mini-Grant (CCMG) Program for the upcoming 2014-2015 academic year. There are two application deadlines – May 15, 2014 (for fall 2014 co-curricular projects) and October 15, 2014 (for spring 2015 co-curricular projects). During the 2014-2015 academic year, the Co-Curricular Mini-Grant Program will award a maximum of $30,000 in mini-grants to a wide variety of co-curricular programs, projects, and partnerships. Proposals for funding are welcome from all students, faculty, and staff. Please contact Walt Horner for the CCMG Request for Proposals (RFP) that includes detailed information about the application process, timeline, and grant-making criteria.
David Gilmore, MS, CNMT, RT, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Academic Affairs, has won the James Lampka Presidential Scholarship from the MSRT (Mass. Society of Radiologic Technologists) this year.
On March 24, at the NERCOMP (Northeast Regional Computing Program) annual conference in Providence, CIO Marla Botelho was a panel member on the Senior Leadership Forum speaking on the changing role of the CIO and how aspiring IT leaders can prepare for advancement to senior leadership positions. NERCOMP is an association partner of Educause. Deborah Cohen and Chad Bergeron also presented at NERCOMP on Starfish.
Jan Tuxbury, Instructor, and Patricia M. McCauley, MSN, RN presented their poster, "Nursing Education in Haiti: Effective Instructional Methods" at the Theta-at-Large 60th Anniversary Conference at Boston University this past week. Photograph is at left.
Kirk Hazlett, Lecturer of Communication, was appointed to the Public Relations Society of America’s Board of Ethics and Professional Standards. Kirk was inducted into the society’s College of Fellows in 2009.
Susan Erickson, Lecturer in the Graduate Education Program, has been selected to present two sessions at the National Science Teachers Association Annual Meeting in Boston in April. Susan's sessions are entitled: “Full Steam Ahead” and “The Great Meadow's Blanding's Turtle project: Empowering Students to Become a Rare Species Voice While Finding Their Own Voice at the Same Time.” Congratulations Susan!
Regis Faculty held a Workload Taskforce Forum on Friday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon to discuss Scholarship, Advising, and Labs.
The School of Nursing, Science and Health Professions and Pi Epsilon-at-Large Chapter Sigma Theta Tau International will present the Twenty-Eighth Annual Distinguished Scholar Lecture on April 7 in CH Foyer from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. This year’s guest speaker is Rosanna DeMarco, PhD, PHCNS-BC, APHN-BC, ACRN, FAAN.

The Regis College English Department is delighted to announce that English/Writing Major and Senior, Rutchelle Alexandre, a native of Roslindale, MA, and an active member of the Regis College Community, has been chosen to represent Regis at the 2014 Boston Intercollegiate Poetry Festival to be held at Boston College April 22. The purpose of the event is to celebrate poetry and highlight talented student poets who are devoted to the craft. The event is free and open to the public. The program will begin with a keynote address by Elizabeth “Betsy” Sholl, poet laureate of the state of Maine from 2006 to 2011. She is author of seven collections of poetry and winner of numerous awards including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Rutchelle’s poem is entitled “You Were Here,” and according to her poetry teacher, Associate Professor Julia Lisella, this “moving and well composed lyric” in memory of a dear friend “makes startling connections and uses fresh language,” in lines such as “I wonder if the ring of my laugh had been the last to reach your ears / Before you made death look so good….” The poem, Julia says, displays great heart and depth of understanding for those we love and lose.
Thank you, Rutchelle. Your words are especially meaningful to Regis graduate students and faculty who mourned this past month the sudden death of graduate student Charlie Jones and joined his family and friends at the funeral service for him on March 22 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Arlington.
The Pre-Medical, Dental, and Veterinary Advisory Committee whose members include Kristen Willems, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology; David Croll, PhD, Professor of Chemistry; and Helen Consiglio, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology, will host an Information Night on April 8 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the Faculty Dining Room to discuss admission to graduate programs and schools for those students who are interested in Medical, Dental or Veterinary School after graduation. Recent Regis graduate Erin Gilmore currently attends Tufts Dental School in Boston and will be here to describe her experiences and answer any questions students may have.

The College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA) has notified me that the Regis Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Team has achieved Scholar All American status for the Fall 2013 semester. The award goes to swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Congratulations!
For most of the week of March 20 I was away on a NEASC site visit as chair of a visiting team. On March 29 I met with “admitted” UG students and their parents. Thank you to all the faculty and staff who participated in this event and welcomed prospective students to campus. Easter is coming, and then Commencement!
