Students & Alums

Attention Graduate Nursing Students: The Natick Visiting Nurse Association will visit Regis tonight, June 26, to recruit top nursing talent in the Grad Student Lounge in College Hall Foyer. The evening will begin with an informational session where you will have the opportunity to explore a career as a visiting nurse. The session will be followed by on-the-spot employment interviews.

Jeff Parish in Kenya 2014Jeff Parish '14 is a camp director and coach of kids in Kenya this summer for US based SoccerPlus Outreach in partnership with Shining Hope Organization (SHO). The Soccerplus Outreach team will work towards the talent development initiative in Western Kenya for three weeks at Friends School Shikokho and Butere Girls High in Kakamega County helping kids with their soccer and their tennis skills. After the soccer and tennis run, Jeff will join other Regis grads with our friend Kathryn Erat and return to Nyumbani, Sister Mary Owen’s orphanage, on a service trip. The Regis Erat Scholars, including Jeff, had visited Nyumbani two years ago. This time, Regis grads on their own initiated and funded the return trip. I’d say that’s a hallmark of successful assimilation of the purpose of Catholic education, wouldn’t you? Incorporation and implementation of the Regis CSJ grace to pursue the active love of God and neighbor. Read more here.

Regis alum Maria Vertkin was in The Boston Herald on June 22 for her great work in “Found in Translation,” her organization helping immigrants to become medical interpreters. Maria, a Russian émigré, took her degree at Regis in social work. Read more here.

Three graduate students in Nursing have successfully presented their doctoral defenses this summer for the DNP: Pat Grobecker, Carol Martin, and Linda Barnard. Several more are in the pipeline for July, August, and early autumn defenses. My sincere congrats to Pat, Carol, and Linda – and thanks to Karen Crowley, DNP, APRN-BC, WHNP, ANP,

Director, Doctor of Nursing Practice Program and Associate Professor. Karen also tells me that Regis’ grant from HRSA for the NFLP grant which she submitted earlier this academic year was renewed for another $97,314. Congratulations Karen! This grant aims particularly at addressing the nursing faculty shortage around the country and will contribute the means to complete their higher degrees to a number of Regis graduate students in nursing.

Ray McCarthy, EdD, Program Director of the EdD in Higher Education Leadership and Colleen Malachowski, PhD, Program Director of Graduate Communications recently attended the spring 2014 convening of the Carnegie Project on the Educational Doctorate (CPED) in Denver, CO. CPED is an international effort aimed at strengthening the EdD while developing a distinct professional practice doctorate. Regis is now one of 87 consortium members internationally. Ray and Colleen contributed to the global dialogue regarding EdD reform efforts and are eager to incorporate these ideas into the new EdD program. The picture above, courtesy of Ray, is a view of Mt. Evans from Echo Lake. To learn more about the CPED program, click here ["" no longer available].

The Association for Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) support the CHSE certification. The CHSE certification launched in June 2012. Since then, applicants from 15 countries have applied to become a CHSE and over 300 healthcare simulation professionals have become certified. This paper is part of an article that will be included in the book entitled, Interpretaciones Críticas de la Biblioteca de Literatura Afrocolombiana, which will be published by the Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana (IILI) at the University of Pittsburgh.

Regis has joined an interprofessional grant with the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine and Mass General Hospital on National Institute of Health (NIH) research into pain management. These institutions are, in turn, collaborating with the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt), University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), and Brigham and Women’s (HSDM-BWH) CoEPEs on a Learning Registry Collaborative CoEPE Coordinating Center (LRCCC) to serve as astructure (e.g., primary steering committee) for: 1) coordinating a common learner evaluation data repository across all participating CoEPEs and 2) conducting analyses and reporting of standardized learner evaluation data. The primary objective of the LRCCC is to “engage NIH-designated CoEPEs in the systematic collection of quantitative and qualitative learner evaluation data to measure the overall impact of the education initiatives.” Specifically, Regis will integrate interprofessional case studies on Chronic Pain into our nursing curriculum. In March 2015 we will be presenting at an interprofessional workshop with Harvard, MGH and Mass College of Pharmacy (MCPH). Kudos to Diane Welsh, Associate Dean of Nursing and Associate Professor of Nursing, and Shawna Erickson, Grant Officer, for making it happen!
