President's Notes III.13March 6, 2014
Students are away on Spring Break, but faculty and staff held an Ash Wednesday service on campus yesterday at noon thanks to the good offices of Campus Ministry. It is good to be mindful as the journey toward Easter begins.
As well, Sister Simone Campbell of “Nuns on the Bus” will be speaking on campus this evening, Thursday, March 6, 7:30-9 pm, as part of a series on “Threads of Inclusion: Recognizing the Sacred in our Lives through Dignity, Grace and Justice,” sponsored by “Sacred Threads,” a non-profit organization providing opportunities to explore and enrich the spiritual journey for people of all faith traditions. Tickets ($35) are for sale at www.sacredthreadscenter.org.

Erin Beloin, our newest faculty member in Medical Imaging, was one of fourteen (14) selected to serve in the 2014 Leadership Academy within the SNMMI (Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging) in Palm Springs, CA, February 5-9. In addition to Erin, Courtney Foster, an adjunct faculty member in the Medical Imaging Department and an alumna of the Regulatory and Clinical Research Management program, was also selected to participate in the Leadership Academy. Associate Dean, Undergraduate Affairs, David Gilmore, and Assistant Dean of Students Walt Horner attended the national FYE (First Year Experience) annual conference in San Diego February 15-18, along with approximately 2000 other professionals in academic affairs and student affairs from around the country. Walt is overseeing our Freshman Year Seminar, and he and David have lots of ideas and plans now underway to enhance it at Regis going forward.
In addition to receiving a $5000 grant to pursue “Common Core State Standards in Speaking and Listening: A Resource Guide,” Associate Professor, Communication, Sara Weintraub is one of six (6) members of the 8000-member strong National Communication Association (NCA) chosen as a project group leader to carry out the terms of a grant from the Lumina Foundation to conduct a faculty-driven student learning outcomes project for the Communication major to the NCA Student-Learning Outcomes in Communication Project. Nancy Kidd, PhD, Executive Director of the NCA wrote to me to share the good news and congratulate Sara explaining that, “The goals of the project are to productively support curriculum planning and improvement within the Communication discipline, and to help position Communication centrally in institutions' general education curriculum development efforts. The selection process for this project was quite competitive with a large number of faculty members applying to participate. Dr. Weintraub will join with faculty from all types of institutions and from an array of scholarly backgrounds to lead this initiative and we all look forward to her contributions to this important national endeavor.” My heartfelt congratulations to you, Sara!
Faculty member Joe Holshoe, PMHNP-BC, a psychiatric nursing expert in sleep disorders, will present a paper at the American Psychiatric Nursing Association 12th Annual Psychopharmacology Conference in Reston, VA, in June. Vice President, Academic Affairs, Malcolm O. Asadoorian, PhD, is welcoming the College Reading and Learning Association C9 Northeast Conference to campus next week. Malcolm is a longstanding member of CRLA, a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring at the college/adult level. The logo at the left is from the Fall 2013 meeting also held in Greater Boston.
Commencement is just around the corner and our “commencement” button, or information hub, is up on the Regis website. I am very pleased that alumna Donna Sytek ’66, former Speaker of the House in the State of New Hampshire, will give the address, and she and banking industry giant Marshall Sloane, will receive honorary degrees. Vice President, Institutional Effectiveness, Susan Tammaro, PhD, has announced that our new Director of the Academic Center for Excellence is Rachel Arno. Rachel holds an MA in Professional Studies with a concentration in Human Resources Management from Stony Brook University. She comes to us with over eight years experience in higher education. Also, Susan M. Erickson has been named Assistant Director of ACE and Daryl Morrazini is our new Coordinator of the Writing Center, replacing Karin Plumadore who has recently accepted an appointment as Special Assistant to the Office of Academic Affairs. Please stop by the ACE to welcome Rachel and Daryl, and to congratulate Susan in her new position. If you are looking for Karin, she can be found in CH311.
The Committee on the Global Screen (under the auspices of a co-curricular grant) is hosting the next film in a series: “Flowers from Another World” / Flores de otro mundo (in Spanish with English Subtitles) on Tuesday evening, March 11, at 5:30 in CH 340. Patricia, a woman from the Dominican Republic, needs a home and economic security that her illegal status in Madrid does not provide her while Milady, twenty, who was born in Havana is dying to travel the world, and Marirosi has a job, a home, and the most complete solitude. A bachelors' party forces an encounter between them and Alfonso, Damián and Carmelo, men from St. Eulalia, a village lacking both marriageable women and a future, and so begins a bittersweet story of sharing a living. The movie script was written by Santiago Garcia de Leaniz (from IMDB).

Center for Global Connections Director, David Crisci, just returned from an Enrollment trip to Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. Here is a photo of him recruiting students there.
This charming article celebrating the University of Haiti-Regis College Haiti Project Graduation appeared in Haitian media on February 19, paying tribute to the nursing faculty who received their Master’s in Science as true “pioneers.” You can read the article en français at this link, and C’est très gentile.
December graduates of the Post-Baccalaureate Nuclear Medicine Program have done extremely well academically and professionally. All passed the national Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Boards the first time, and one passed with the highest distinction (which only 5.94% of the total number of examinees achieved in 2013) and two with distinction (which only 11.8% of the total number of examinees achieved in 2013). The Regis College average score was 81.60, which puts us in the 90th percentile nationally. Three of the handful of our first graduates in this program have already gone on to work, for example, as a Nuclear Cardiology Technologist at Massachusetts General Hospital; a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at Massachusetts General Hospital-North Shore Campus; and at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Professor Ernie Collamati has announced the 2014 Erat Scholars: Sade Callwood, Kalliope Fabrikarakis, Kelsey Heath, Connor O’Leary, Christina Pierre-Louis, Brenda Resillas, Latoya Scott, Dwayne Smoot, Ashley Ventolieri, and Yevgeniya Wright. Warm congratulations to each of them on this notable achievement. Our benefactress, Ms. Kathryn Erat, Dr. Joseph Draper of Religious Studies and Dr. Susan Sawyer of Nursing are leading this year's Seminar, which will culminate in a two week trip to China in May. Dr. M. J. Doherty of the President’s Office will be travelling with the group on my behalf.
Regis continues to express its intergenerational sense of learning community. Surrounded by parents, grandparents, and teachers, the children of Regis College Children's Center and Academy gathered in the College gym for the medal ceremony following their fun filled, active, child-centered athletic enrichment activities on February 28. Eight classes of toddlers, preschoolers and Kindergartners enjoyed movement and skill activities arranged by the Center teachers and Regis College students on February 28. The Regis College Children’s Center and Academy, located on the Regis College Campus enroll children ages fifteen months to five years old. The RCCC provides child care and education services to children of Regis College staff and faculty, as well as families of surrounding communities. The Children’s Center is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care and accredited by The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The center is fully staffed by early childhood education professionals who believe in educating the whole child with emphasis on each area of child development: social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and aesthetic. A unique aspect of the Children's Center is that it serves as a teaching center for Regis College students. Student teachers and work-study students help to maintain low staff/child ratios and are provided with rich opportunities to conduct on-site field observations and internships.
So, too, the Regis College Summer Scholars program, which aims at high school juniors and seniors and provides the opportunity for them to get a head start on college courses, was officially launched in late February. An email blast was sent to over 30,000 prospective students around the country, and a direct mail postcard has been mailed to 5,000+ prospects in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. We have already had dozens of inquiries!
Congratulations are also in order for students in the Museum Studies Practicum graduate course. They curated an art exhibition dedicated to the history of Regis through the Sisters of St. Joseph using pieces from Regis’ own art collection. You can read more about it here.

The Pride: The top-seeded Regis College women's basketball team won its second consecutive New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship with a 71-43 victory over No. 2 Elms College on Saturday afternoon, March 1, with the game being played here on campus. Junior co-captain Emilee Marro (Bedford, N.H.) has been named this week's Regis College Student-Athlete of the Week after helping lead the Pride to their Championship. It was a big week for Marro as she was named the Tournament MVP on Saturday afternoon after guiding the Pride to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. Marro scored 21 points, including her 1,000th career point and added six rebounds and three assists in a 74-50 win in the Semifinals over Becker. She followed that up with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals in a 71-43 win over Elms in the Championship game. For the week, Marro averaged 18.5 points, six rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. Heritage Day: In honor of the mission of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Regis College Community will join together on Wednesday, March 19 to observe Heritage Day. Classes will be suspended until 1:00 p.m. so that faculty, staff and students are able to participate in this extraordinary event. You will receive additional information as the date nears and the program has been finalized.
On Wednesday morning, March 5, I joined Associate Dean, Graduate Affairs, Claudia Pouravelis, Ed. D, and the President of Stonehill College, Rev. John Denning, C.S.C., and Stonehill’s Dean of Academic Achievement, Craig Almeida, PhD, Provost and Vice President, Academic Affairs, Dr.Joe Favazza, and our deans and graduate program directors to discuss common ground in curricula and curriculum planning, particularly with regard to partnerships in which Stonehill undergrads might benefit from Regis graduate programs. My thanks to Claudia for organizing this.

Next week, of course, I shall be joining our alums and meeting with donors around the spectacular Saint Patrick’s Day parade and other events in Naples, Florida.
March 23 marks the fourth anniversary of the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA). Massachusetts led the way with its own version in 2006. At both levels, problems with implementation, especially with website enrollment, have dominated the headlines. But Massachusetts has increased access so that today more than 98 percent of people are covered. Preventive strategies have increased, and trips to the emergency room have declined. ACA is also affecting the health care system, with young adults staying longer on their parents’ policies and exclusions for pre-existing conditions barred. Overall, how are we doing, and where are we going? A Massachusetts Health Reform Update will be the focus of our President’s Lecture Series on Health on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Upper Student Union Lounge in Alumnae Hall.
