President's Notes III.10January 23, 2014
Good day to all in the Regis College Community. Despite the polar vortex (brr!), the bombogenesis of snow storms, the New Year and spring (yes, spring!) semester have gotten off to a roaring start, beginning with the Faculty Workshop on January 16 on the topic of faculty development, during which Regis faculty heard from Lisa Perry-Wood, a principal in Clarity Consulting Partners, with over twenty years of grant writing and fundraising experience, in a talk called “Grant unto Me,” and from Suzanne Kearney, Ph.D., Executive Director and Sister Ann Marie Ghiloni, CSJ, Director of Mission Effectiveness of the Corporation for Sponsored Ministries for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston on the topic of "Seeds for the Future." The Corporation will meet here at Regis on January 29, and I shall speak about Regis at that gathering.
The Faculty will hold its first regular faculty meeting tomorrow, Friday January 24, at 2 p.m.
Classes resumed this week, and new, extended library hours commenced. The Regis College Library will now be open Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m.-2 a.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; and Sunday, 12 p.m.–2 a.m. Students and faculty thank Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness Susan Tammaro and Interim Library Co-Director Heather Pena for arranging the new hours, in collaboration with Campus Police.
As well, whether skiing now or gearing up for track (or life), a YOGA class will start on January 28, 5-6 p.m. for ten weeks (no classes February 18 and April 22), free for students, faculty, and staff, in the Dance Studio next to the Simeone Fitness Center.
Seniors, some juniors, and most graduate students are, of course, thinking already about the BIG commencement that is on its way, and what will follow. This year’s Connection 2014 Jobs Fair will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00pm in the College Hall Foyer. What makes the Connection 2014 Jobs Fair different is that Regis does not charge employers for on-campus recruiting, something that most colleges do. Susan Kennedy, Director of Internships and Career Development at Regis, observed that “the employers from last year’s event were very impressed by Regis students. Our students are interdisciplinary thinkers who come from a diverse demographic making them primed and ready for the global market of the real world.”
As Regis faculty and staff continue to ride a technology wave, Andrea Humphrey, PhD, Assistant Professor, Women’s Studies, and Co-Ordinator of rTIP (Regis Technology Innovation Program) has announced new Moodle Basics training and iPad introduction workshops for new faculty, especially adjuncts. iPad pick-up and introduction began on January 16 in CH 131 (the Helpdesk Meeting Room) and continued on January 21 and today, January 23 (5-6 p.m.). Moodle Basics began on Jan. 21 and also continued today (12:30 – 1:45 p.m.) in the Mac Lab. Brad Moore, Steve Sedman, and Chad Bergeron are the instructors, along with Andrea herself. Thank you, all.
Faculty And Staff
Regis Faculty and Staff have been busy and productive this past year, and the Christmas break gave them some time to let me know what they have been up to regarding faculty and staff development and participation in professional conferences. Last June, Margherite Matteis, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, attended the International Family Nursing Association (IFNA) Conference. She presented a short piece on how she uses technology and integrates family nursing theory in our NU 669, Family Systems Theory Course. IFNA posted this on YouTube.
On October 10, Adjunct Professor of Italian, Nicoletta Pellegrino, presented a paper at a University of California-Rome conference called “Early Modern Rome 1341-1667” held in the Biblioteca Vallicelliana. The session title was “Ecclesiastical Use of Tombs and Facades,” and Nicoletta spoke on “Building Faith.” The other faculty participants in the session were from the University of Maryland-College Park and University of London.
Anthony D'Aries, M.F.A., Assistant Professor of English and Undergraduate Writing Program Director, has had an interview on creative non-fiction that he gave Fairfield University’s magazine, Masonsroad published, and it can be seen here.
Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida, has also invited Anthony to speak at its 2014 President's Speaker Series on February 26 at 7 p.m. The event will be broadcasted on Marc Bernier's radio show: http://www.marcberniershow.com, and more information about it can be found at
Several faculty from the Clinical Resource and Simulation Center have been selected to present at the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Annual conference. Pat McCauley, Marion Santos, Jan Tuxbury and guest lecturer, Dan Scanlon from Trinity EMS will present “The Transition to Ethical Practice: Managing Complex Challenges.” Joan Dorr and M. Sharon Wong will present “Empowering Nurses to End the Culture of Silence.” Pat McCauley has been appointed as the National League for Nursing Ambassador for Regis College. Way to go, Pat et al.!
This week, both VP Susan Tammaro, Ph.D., and David Gilmore, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Affairs, attended the annual conference of the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) held in Washington (Jan. 22-25) in the snow, but as seasoned New Englanders now that did not interfere with their participation in the discussion of “Quality, E-Quality, And Opportunity: How Educational Innovations Will Make—or Break— America’s Global Future.” Session topics included global education, STEM, on-line learning, the present and the future of liberal arts and sciences education, “preparing for the Apocalypse” in educational reform, and giving the underserved a seat at the table – all topics Regis is registering in its own social and intellectual nervous system, too. Associate Deans David Gilmore and Claudia Pouravelis, Ed.D and SLAESS Dean Malcolm Asadoorian, Ph.D., tell me that we have now launched five new on-line courses for Spring, 2014 (HI 104; RS 205; PH 104; MU 209; SO 201) and plans for at least three new ones for Fall, 2014 are in the works (CO 203; ID 304; MA 210).
The School of Liberal Arts, Education, and Social Sciences has some new faculty and staff members. Stephanie Schorow, a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, with a Master’s from the Medill School of Journalism at NYU focusing on Latin American Studies, is our new Graduate Program Director for the Master of Arts in Professional Writing. Stephanie comes to us from her former post as Assistant Director of Public Relations and Editorial Services at Bunker Hill Community College, and years of experience both in teaching and as a free-lance writer. Welcome, Stephanie.
Elizabeth Smith, a Regis alum with an MSM and M.Div. from Boston University, is now ABD in Theology at Catholic U., and a new half-time Assistant Professor of Music here. Elizabeth will be working under the guidance of Dr. Sheila Prichard. Welcome, Elizabeth.
Dean Penelope Glynn, Ph.D., RN, has announced new hires in the School of Nursing, Science, and Health Professions as well. These are Erin Beloin – Assistant Professor, Medical Imaging and Allison Bernard, RN, MSN, DNP, Associate Professor, Nursing. Erin is a 2007 Stonehill grad and Simmons MBA candidate with extensive experience as a nuclear medicine technologist as MGH and Children’s Hospital. Allison has her DNP from Northeastern University, where she also took her MSN, having received her BSN in Seattle. She comes to us from Metrowest Medical Center where she was Director of Nursing and from Boston Medical Center where she was a nurse manager.
The Office of Institutional Advancement is pleased to announce that the College has received renewal grants from the Yawkey Foundation and Schrafft Charitable Trust for scholarships.
As well, Dr. Sara Chudnovsky Weintraub, Associate Professor of the Communication Department, has received a $5,000 grant award from the National Communication Association. Through this award, Dr. Weintraub will lead the project "Common Core State Standards in Speaking and Listening: A Resource Guide" that will develop resources for teachers in grades 6 - 12 to help them implement the Standards for Speaking and Listening which are part of Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Dr. Weintraub is working with Ruth Kay, MA, and Jean Streiff, MA, school teachers from Michigan and Pennsylvania
Shortly before Christmas Break, I had the joy of visiting Bethany Health Care Center where many of our retired faculty and staff who are Sisters of St. Joseph now live. On the left, here is our HR Director, Joan Sullivan, with former French professor, Sister Rosenda Gill, CSJ (foreground) and former History professor, Sister Catherine Mary Meade, CSJ, Ph.D. Below, seated left to right are Sister Helen Fenton, CSJ; Sister Patricia O'Connell, CSJ; Sister Mary Malone, CSJ; Sister Patricia Malone, CSJ; and Sr. Mildred Malone, CSJ. Joan Sullivan, Barbara Shockley, Director of Advancement for Bethany, and Sister Brenda Forry, CSJ, Administrator/Pastoral Care Coordinator, and I are standing in the back row.Both Bethany and St. Joseph's Hall were the recipients of donations collected from Regis' annual faculty and staff Christmas party.
In early January, my husband and I attended the CIC meeting for presidents in Florida, and I came away feeling that Regis is right on track and, in some respects, ahead of the game. We have already launched initiatives that other colleges and universities have just begun talking about.

Coming up, Students from the Museum Practicum course, in consultation with Professor Kathryn Edney, have curated an exhibit with pieces from the Regis College art and antiques collection based on the history of the College and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. This exhibition, entitled “Following Our Path,” will be open February 3 to May 10.
