Baccalaureate and Commencement!

2013 Commencement TentWell, the lovely ark of a tent on the Great Lawn is now down, but we certainly enjoyed it during Commencement week while embarking on several other journeys. Starting with the Graduate Hooding on May 7 and the Odyssey Boat Cruise on the evening of May 8, which was sponsored by Regis College Graduate Affairs and Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations, the campus was exhilarated.

Cruise ShipAssociate Dean, Graduate Affairs, Claudia Pouravelis, Ed.D, was the animating spirit behind both the hooding and the cruise, and I especially thank her. She thanks all hooders, Aramark, Steve and Andre at the FAC, Esther and her team, the Grad Admissions Department (Jenene, Shelagh, Sean) and graduate student workers (Alexa, Stacey, Bethany, and Kristy), saying that “many hands absolutely made light work.”

Our Baccalaureate, including its celebration of the Baccalaureate Mass and Pinning, followed on May 10. I am very grateful to chaplain Father Paul Kilroy for the manner in which he embraced the diverse audience of our parents and students while explaining the Baccalaureate Liturgy to them as a mark of Regis’s Catholic identity, and to Sister Betsy Conway, CSJ, and Pastor Lesette Wright for the blessings they extended to all our graduates.

Above here is Joseph Osborne ’13 of Plymouth, who took his BA magna cum laude, receiving a congratulatory embrace from Sister Betsy while Laura Lombardi ’13 joyfully looks on. Amy Padilla and Kalin GearinAmy Padilla, BS, cum laude, from Cambridge, and Kalin M. Gearin, BS, from Arlington, were both delighted and delightful as Chemistry professor David Croll and Religious Studies professor Ernest Collamati invested them with the bachelor’s hood (left).

Regis graduated 548 students across degrees ranging from the Associate of Science (125) to the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (18). There were 108 Bachelor of Arts graduates, 109 Bachelor of Science, and 15 Bachelor of Social Work. Thirteen students (13) took the Master of Arts in Teaching, and 155 took the Master of Science degree (19 Master of Health Administration; 13 Master of Organizational & Professional Communication; 3 Master of Regulatory & Clinical Management; 1 Master of Arts in Heritage Studies; and 120 Master of Nursing). Some post- graduate certificates were also awarded.

On April 29th, at Morrison House, I had congratulated the students, both graduate and undergraduate, who completed their programs leading to teacher licensure. The occasion was the presentation of the professional portfolios, in which the teacher candidates provided evidence of having satisfied the competencies required by the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers. Following is a list of the students and the licenses for which they qualify: Tefta Checola, Special Education 5 – 12; Jessica Davis, Special Education 5 – 12; Robert Goodale, Special Education Pre-K – 8; Olivia Lander, Elementary 1 – 6; Jeanne Melanson, Special Education Pre-K – 8; Mandy Roan, Elementary 1 – 6 Professional Level; Shannon Tonelli, Special Education Pre-K – 8.

Now, before commenting on Commencement, let me fill you in on some other campus news.


Associate Professor of Chemistry Leslie Bishop has been elected the Central Division Chair of NEACT (New England Association of Chemistry Teachers) and looks forward to holding next year's central division meeting at Regis in May, 2014.

Nursing instructor Margaret Sharon Wong, MSN,RN was nominated, along with the CICU nurses at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, for the 2013 Boston Globe Salute to Nurses. Professor Wong teaches in the Clinical Resource and Simulation Center and is a clinical instructor at Regis. Congratulations, Sharon!

Nursing Instructor Susan Katz Sliski (below) participated in a DNP poster presentation at the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) National Conference where she also chaired a presentation on “Global Best Practices.”

Former Spanish professor Joyce Haggerty ’56, PhD, passed away on April 27. Joyce loved being a Spanish professor at Regis College and later at Framingham State College. She was a former president of the American Association of Teachers for Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and a member of the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association. She was a positive influence in bringing Professor Mary Anne Vetterling (Spanish) to join the Regis faculty.

I also regret having to report to you that Yolande Nazaire, former Dean of the nursing school at the University of Haiti, has passed away. I first met Yolande in 2007; she visited Regis with the Director of Nursing in the Haitian Ministry of Health, Maude Duvilaire, in 2008, and we all became fast friends. Both were helpful to us in conceiving and launching the Regis College Haiti Project to educate Haitian nursing faculty. May Yolande rest in peace.


Claudia, Paul & JeneneWearing Regis logos, Vice President Paul Vaccaro, Enrollment Management and Marketing, Associate Dean, Graduate Affairs, Claudia Pouravelis, and Grad Admissions Counselor Jenene Romanucci attended the National Association for Graduate Admission Professionals (NAGAP) annual conference April 24-27 in Orlando, Florida, and presented their collaborative talk, “David v. Goliath: Overcoming Graduate Recruiting Challenges at Small Colleges,” to rave reviews. Some colleagues noted it was the best presentation of the entire conference.

Assistant Dean of Students Walt Horner announced the return of the Co-Curricular Mini-Grants (CCMG) Program for the 2013-2014 academic year with two application deadlines – May 15, 2013 (yesterday) for fall 2013 co-curricular projects, and October 15, 2013, for spring 2014 co-curricular projects.

President’s Office

On May 9, The Regis College Board of Trustees met. Trustees received an update presentation from Sasaki representatives on our Master Plan similar to the one given at our Town Meeting on April 30. Upon the recommendation of the Board Academic Affairs Committee, the Board also approved new programs developed in the curriculum of SLAESS, namely Justice Studies and Interdisciplinary Arts. Congratulations to the SLAESS faculty who worked on those proposals and to SLAESS Dean Malcolm Asadoorian, PhD. The Board also passed the FY’14 budget proposed by Vice President Thomas Pistorino, Finance and Business.

With representatives of the Corporation of Sponsored Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, we held a New Trustee Orientation on the morning of Friday, May 10, and welcomed John Tegan and Michael Halloran to the Board.

On Tuesday evening, May 14, Dr. Doherty and I attended the “donors’ dinner” at our neighbors, Blessed John XXIII Seminary. On Wednesday evening, May 14, my husband and I attended the Catholic Charities Spring Celebration at the JFK Library in Boston where I enjoyed seeing Regis alum Ginny Kaneb and her husband John. Great friends to Regis and supporters of faculty development as well as student scholarships, the Kanebs will be here on campus next Monday, May 20, for our annual Kaneb Scholars’ Luncheon, at which faculty who have benefited from sabbatical research funded by Kaneb Grants will present their work. I am particularly pleased and grateful at John and Ginny’s support of our digital pedagogy initiatives. Thank you, John and Ginny!

Phil GarberEarlier in the week I attended the Spellman Dinner May 3, 2013 (shown below on the right with Regis’s friend of longstanding, Phil Garber). Also, the Regis College Spellman Stamp Museum presented the new stamp of the American flag and was written up in the local news here.

Regis College Athletics

There is so much good news about Regis College Athletics, its championships, and awards to players as the year concluded, I am referring you to our Athletics web page and taking note of champions:

Women’s Lacrosse captured an inaugural NECC Championship in an overtime thriller [" 13/releases/201305046waz60" no longer available].

Also in Women’s Lacrosse – Salamone was selected NECC’s Top Rookie, Conant named Coach of the Year.

Men’s Track & Field is also making tracks, and don’t forget that the Men’s Track & Field ECAC Outdoor Championships are at Springfield tonight, May 16, at 5:00 p.m.


GraduatesAs you know, Commencement was glorious, and we were bursting at the seams. Thank you, all, who produce this splendid ceremony every year, and this year did an outstanding job: Executive Assistant, Mary Connolly; Associate Dean, Undergraduate Affairs, David Gilmore; Physical Plant Director Joe Shaughnessy and crew; Campus Police Frank Bielawski, Sean Maher, and officers; Aramark Food Service; Steve Hall and the staff of the Fine Arts Center; Professor Sheila Prichard and all our musicians; and, of course, faculty, staff and students. The line of march down Katsura Drive was impressive, and the waiting audience of family and friends thrilled to see their graduates. Although it was a blustery day, some rain showers just came and went and did not interfere.

CommencementHere on the right is a photograph of our Commencement Speaker and honorary degree recipient, His Eminence, Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, OFM, Cap. our honorary degree recipient Kathryn Erat, sponsor of the Erat Scholars program, and Associate Professor Ernest Collamati, PhD, taken just after I hooded Kathryn. Dr. Collamati accompanied Kathryn in the march and read her citation; Special Assistant to the President, M. J. Doherty,’67. PhD, accompanied the Cardinal and read his citation. Each received a Regis College honorary doctorate of laws, and you may find the citations on our Regis College website on the Commencement page.

The title of Cardinal Seán’s address was “Living the Social Gospel,” and in stories of actual people and references to papal teaching he spoke about the dignity of the human person, the importance of community, and the role of the social justice principle of the common good in today’s world to numerous cheers.

My office has received calls requesting a copy of his talk; I do not yet have it, but will post it on our Commencement page when I receive it. Meanwhile, some of the Cardinal’s remarks can be found in the following Boston Globe news article on the Regis Commencement by Wesley Lowery.

Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, OFM, Cap.Another article about our Commencement is also in this week’s Weston Town Crier (May 16, 2013) on page A3 and will shortly be available on our website.

The Cardinal’s address pointedly addressed first generation graduates and their families in attendance and Catholic educators. It also addressed the thinking behind Catholic identity, including that of higher education. In this sense I think Cardinal Sean was particularly speaking to faculty and to the importance of Catholic higher education in greater Boston.

Here is a photograph taken just after I hooded Cardinal Seán with his honorary doctoral hood. Trustee Carole Barrett ’63 can just be seen on the left (and is here for her fiftieth reunion this coming weekend), and Trustee Meyer Chambers is in the background with Dr. M. J. Doherty on the right. We are all smiling, among other reasons, because the Cardinal, a tall man, had to stoop so I could place the hood on his shoulders!

Commencement proceeded in usual fashion with designated Regis academic deans and faculty and our Dean of Students, Kara Kolomitz smoothly calling out the names of individual graduates and handing out our wonderful Latin diplomas.

Ketsia Dorilas

This photograph of Ketsia Dorilas,’13, BA, from Milton, about to receive her diploma, conveys the feeling as a line of expectant classmates look on.

Tomorrow the College will begin Reunion under another tent in the Tower Garden tomorrow, May 17, launching it first of all with the Golden Tower Luncheon in the Lower Student Union. This weekend my youngest son J. J. is also graduating from Fairfield University, and my husband and I will spend part of the weekend there. I am now the proud mother of three graduates from Catholic institutions of higher education – Alexis graduated from Boston College. Wesley from Emmanuel College, and now, J. J. And, as you know, Alexis and her husband Brent have just made me the grandmother of the completely enchanting Olivia.

Thank you, Regis College community, for a wonderful academic year. We are already in Summer Session One now, and our growth and vibrancy are everywhere evident because of you. The next issue of President’s Notes should be out on May 30.
