President's Notes 1.24June 14, 2012
At last, summer seems to be taking hold, and those of you who have vegetable gardens can look forward to fresh tomatoes….
A recent news item caused me to reflect that Regis has been “in the business” of social justice outreach through education for a long time; it’s part of our heritage as a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, and that fact, or Regis “flavor,” shows up in little, unexpected tidbits from time to time. Thus Regis alum Bonna Mai ’89, was named in the Lowell Sun as her daughter Brianna goes off to college. At the age of 17, Bonna emigrated from Cambodia when it was under the Khmer Rouge, took a BA here at Regis and a Master’s in social work at BU. She works in the Lowell community now, extending the tradition. See the article here:
Vice President Tom Pistorino was chosen to participate in a Council for Independent Colleges and the American Academic Leadership Institute (CIC) this month. Scroll down and you’ll see the group drawn from California, Missouri, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, West Virginia, and Georgia that will be joining him -- only two are from Massachusetts, Tom and James Ostrow from Lasell, and Suzanne Mellon is from St. Anselm’s in New Hampshire. We are proud of you, Tom!

Malcolm is around campus this month and working with Sister Betty Cawley, CSJ, PhD, current Academic Dean, SLAESS, to accomplish a smooth transition.
Assistant Professor Raffaele Florio, History and Heritage Studies, has been notified that his paper proposal titled, “"The feast of Santa Maria a Mare,” has been accepted for the International Symposium on Public History: History and Its Publics, which will be held at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, July 16 – 20, 2012.
Assistant Professor of Psychology, Helen Consiglio, informs me that she and other Regis faculty (April Fletcher, Barbara Dowds, Carol Dorr, Diane Welsh, Heidi Webster, Mary Scanlon, Dean Penny Glynn, and Shelby Ortega) held a “Center for Social Innovation” Meeting on June 7 at which they learned about CSI and its affiliated training institution, T3. They also had the opportunity to brainstorm concerning innovative and creative ways to work with the CSI and a chance to communicate what we feel would be the most beneficial training for our students. If our group goes ahead with a collaboration with CSI, Regis will be the first college the Center has partnered with, and CSI is excited about the opportunity.
The Regis College Haiti Project was featured in the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) Spring, 2012 Newsletter. This issue contains some other important articles as well. In April, Dr. Mary Anne Vetterling presented a paper on “Ecocriticism and María Rosa Lida de Malkiel’s Writings” at a seminar for specialists in the field held at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and has recently revised that paper for possible publication. Her attendance at this conference was funded by a grant from Regis made possible by Virginia Pyne Kaneb (Regis ’57). Later in the month of April, Dr. Vetterling took her seminar on Don Quijote to the Don Quixote Ballet, a “co-curricular” event partially funded by Regis. Students were delighted to see this real-live dance version of the book they had just been reading and analyzing. Last but not least, Dr. Vetterling and colleague Dr. Lucia Ortiz of Regis, working with Professor Joy Renjilian-Burgy, of Wellesley College, have just published a book of essays commemorating the conference they held at Regis in 2009. Steve Hall, Fine Arts Center Director, was recently elected to be the Vice President of New England Presenters. Founded in 1981, New England Presenters (NEP) is a non-profit, regional consortium of performing arts presenters from public and private colleges and universities, preparatory schools, municipal arts agencies and community based organizations of all sizes. NEP serves its membership by facilitating block booking of tours; commissioning new works in dance, music and mixed art forms that tour the New England region; supporting special projects by artists, sometimes in collaboration with other regional presenting groups and, providing professional development opportunities for presenters to exchange management and artistic ideas. Steve recently served on the strategic planning committee for NEP where he authored NEP’s Vision and Mission statement.
The Coffee on June 11 to honor Sister Rosemary Mulvihill, RSM, was bittersweet. Sister Rosemary, thank you so much for your deep investment of yourself and your talents at Regis in the past ten years. We will miss you!
I must also thank Associate Vice President, Academic Affairs, Sarah Barrett, who will be retiring from her full-time dedication to Regis at the end of this month. Sarah is the go-to person regarding many academic administrative matters, and she promises to pass on her procedures and protocols before leaving – and we hope to see her here in the fall in a part-time advising capacity, too.
Thanks to Joan Sullivan, Director of Human Resources, and her team of collaborators, we all enjoyed a terrific “Staff Appreciation Day” cookout down at the FAC on Tuesday, June 12. I always enjoy this annual event. Vice President, Enrollment Managing and Marketing, Paul Vaccaro, filled in this year as MC for Vice President, Finance and Business, Tom Pistorino, and described the shift as one moving from Johnny Carson to Jay Leno!

Professor Mary Anne Vetterling, PhD, notes that Regis has been hosting the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese) awards ceremony for a number of years, and that was the case on May 23. 2012, at a special dinner. The top students in the state were honored at the ceremony and came from as far away as the Holyoke Community Charter School or as nearby as the Meadowbrook School. Other Massachusetts schools represented were: Brookline Concord, Newton, Lexington, Maldon Catholic High School, the Mystic Valley Regional High School, and Pentucket Regional High School.
The ceremony, organized by Patricia Donahue McElhiney, Director of the National Spanish Exams in Massachusetts, and co-director, George Watson, also recognized student award winners of the National Spanish Exam and the AATSP Early Language Poster Contest. Participating in honoring the state winners, their families and teachers were AATSP Chapter President Professor Joy Renjilian-Burgy of Wellesley College, Dr. Mary-Anne Vetterling of Regis College, and Stephanie Cuddeback-Salim, Spanish teacher from Matignon High School and member of the Executive Council of the national AATSP. Patricia Donahue-McElhiney is a Regis graduate (1971) and is currently teaching part-time at Regis. Honored at that ceremony was Marissa Kelbermann, from the Florence Sawyer School, the winner of the AATSP Early Language Poster Contest, run by Inés Rodríguez Digón, (Concord). In addition, illiamstown resident, Mrs. Ann-Marie Rodriguez, teacher of Spanish at Lenox High School, was honored. In recognition of her skill, dedication and enthusiasm in the teaching of Spanish, Mrs. Rodriguez was awarded the fifth annual Embassy of Spain Scholarship for summer Study in Spain.
Presentation of the award was made by Mr. Francisco de Asís García Díéz, Education Advisor of the Government of Spain in New England. Also participating in the presentation was Mr. Mario Ruíz Legido, Director of the Aula Cervantes Institute located at Boston University. This prestigious award will provide a unique, enriching language and culture immersion for Mrs. Rodriguez. She will be attending the University of Salamanca, one of the oldest and most distinguished universities of Europe.
Board Of Trustees
As this issue of the President’s Notes goes out, our Board is about to participate in a day-long retreat. Among the topics for discussion will be the recent SJC decision, Institutional Advancement planning, and the Regis College Strategic Plan. At this retreat, we will also pay special tribute to outgoing Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston President, Sister Mary Murphy, CSJ, and welcome incoming CSJ President, Sister Rosemary Brennan, CSJ, who will serve ex officio on our Board. Sister Mary, many thanks for all you have done for Regis in the past six years! May your sabbatical bring you much refreshment of spirit.
Speaking of the Strategic Plan and retreats, I wish to thank everyone on campus for a remarkable first year of active and dynamic consultation and development of an active and dynamic living document as our Strategic Plan. Besides the generosity with which you all conferred with your Administrative Council area leader, a number of groups on campus availed themselves of the intensive kind of discussion retreats can offer as well. You have all contributed to this SP. With today’s Board retreat, we complete a year that has included the following: SLAESS Faculty (+ Retreat), SNSHP Faculty (+Retreat), AC retreat, AC area staff consultations, Director’s Council (+ Retreat), Alumni Board (+Retreat), Board Retreat. The community that plans together, stays together!
As I approach the close of my first year as President, I already have my goals for next year all lined up. Regis is on the move!
