Experts to Highlight New Treatments for Schizophrenia and Bi-Polar Disorders at RegisNovember 8, 2017
Free, Public Forum Will Take Place on Nov. 15
Leading experts will highlight innovative and alternative mental health treatments in an upcoming Regis President’s Lecture Series on Health.
“Schizophrenia/Bi-Polar Disorders/New Treatment Modalities,” will focus on the latest research on causes and treatments of these conditions, including counseling, yoga, and integrated treatment. Experts will also discuss the diagnosis and stigma of post-traumatic stress disorder. A panelist who lives with one of the disorders will share his experiences, as well as his role as an advocate for mental health. The event, on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Regis Fine Arts Center on the university’s Weston campus.
“This lecture will educate people about the reality of mental health illnesses and the possibility of living well, despite them,” said President Antoinette Hays, PhD, RN. “Regis has a nationally recognized School of Nursing and expanding School of Health Sciences as well as a strategic graduate focus on health care. We are pleased to bring together this panel of esteemed health care experts to share their valuable knowledge about these serious conditions.”
The panel, moderated by the university’s Psychology Program Director Helen Consiglio, PhD, includes:
- Matthew A. Munich, PhD, LICSW, licensed social worker in private practice, and adjunct professor at Salem State University School of Social Work;
- Ann K. Shinn, MD, MPH, co-director at McLean On Track, and director of Clinical Research at Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder Research Program at McLean Hospital;
- Howard Trachtman, BS, CPS, CPRP, co-founder and president emeritus, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Greater Boston Consumer Advocacy Network;
- Joseph Gonzalez-Heydrich, MD, director of the Developmental Neuropsychiatry Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital.
The Regis President’s Lecture Series on Health, established in 2007, is a unique series of free discussion forums addressing contemporary issues in clinical care, health care delivery, health policy, and public health. Held on the Regis campus and cosponsored by Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, the series invites members of the public and the university community to participate in an exciting dialogue with health care leaders from government and the health professions.
