Scholar Athletes today joined with representatives from Curry College and Regis College to surprise two East Boston High School seniors with full tuition 4-year college scholarships. The students, Kayla Elliot and Juliane Jorge are both Zone members of the East Boston High School Scholar Athletes Zone.
“We are very proud of these two young women and all that they have accomplished,” said Daphne Griffin, Scholar Athletes Executive Director. “They both represent the best of Scholar Athletes and of the Boston Public Schools. They have truly earned these scholarships and this recognition.”
Kayla, who will attend Curry College, has earned a 5.2 cumulative GPA and plans to pursue a career in nursing. She is a National Honor Society Member and captain of her varsity softball team.
Juliane, who will attend Regis College, has earned a 5.05 cumulative GPA and is also a two-sport athlete, and captains her volleyball and basketball teams. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Both young women are residents of East Boston.
“We’re excited to welcome Juliane to our beautiful campus and look forward to watching this talented young woman pursue her education,” said Regis College President Antoinette Hays, PhD, RN. “Scholar Athletes is an incredible program that helps students fulfill their dreams of going to college every year.”
"Kayla and Juliane have worked incredibly hard to earn this accomplishment," said Tommy Chang, Boston Public Schools Superintendent. "Their success in the classroom and in athletics prove what is possible when young people are supported by caring adults. We are fortunate to have organizations like Scholar Athletes as partners in this important work."
Scholar Athletes, the non-profit that facilitated the scholarships, has 23 high school Zones (dedicated classroom spaces) across Massachusetts staffed with full time program staff who work with student athletes on academics, college planning, and health and wellness. Each year Scholar Athletes nominates student Zone members to receive the scholarships from partner colleges and universities. Since its inception in 2009 the organization has facilitated more than $4.2 million in college scholarships for Zone members.
Zone members applied for the scholarships and were recommended by Scholar Athletes based on academic performance, Zone participation, and financial need.
