Woman with the Red Kerchief chosen for Russian Theatre Festival
Lement & Mostashari do it again

Weston, Massachusetts. Woman with the Red Kerchief, a play about Leo Tolstoy by Regis College theater professor Wendy Lement and historian Firouzeh Mostashari, now of the University of Iowa, has been chosen to receive professional production at the New England Russian Theatre Festival in February.

The festival, which will also consist of ten-minute plays and a variety of workshops on Russian Theatre, will be held at Boston Playwrights' Theatre on February 19-21, 2010. One of only two plays chosen for full production, Woman with the Red Kerchief will open at the Boston Playwrights' Theatre on February 19, 2010 and be on the boards through February 21, 2010, directed by Melissa Penley.

Even the opening date is significant. February 19 historically marks the emancipation of the serfs in imperial Russia, and the play explores a little known chapter in Tolstoy’s life through the eyes of a young married serf on his estate.

Since the play’s off-campus premiere in the fall of 2008 at the Theater in the Open in Newburyport, Woman with the Red Kerchief has enjoyed increasing success. A scene from the play will be featured at the Our Voices Theatre Festival, which showcases works by women playwrights, co-sponsored by Image Theatre and the Regis College Theatre Company (Feb. 27, 2010), and Lement will also direct a full production at Regis between April 22-25, 2010.
